Chapter 1 – Introducing Sophie

SOHPIES POV:

“Sophie, you have to get up and start getting ready for school!” Jane pounded her fist on my bedroom door. Jane, you could say, was my mother. Well, no, that would be a lie. She was actually the woman my real parents had hired to act like it.

Now that I live in Australia, the last thing I need is for anyone to know who I really am. I, Sophie Tomlinson, am the princess of the UK.

When I was young I had an awful life threatening experience, so my parents rationally decided to send me to Australia with my brother Louis. ‘That way,’ they told me, ‘you will be safer. As long as no one knows who you are, you’ll be fine. This is temporary—just until you are old enough to come back and reclaim your place.’

At the age of nine, I flew a plane with my older brother Louis to here in Sydney, New South Wales to begin a new life. The fact that Australia was far away and that not many people cared about the royal family was perfect. We moved to a small area and began attending school right away. We kept our names and if anyone got suspicious of us and our relation to the King and Queen, we’d brush it off and call it a coincidence. After that, no further questions were asked.

I’ve been living in Australia for the past 8 years and you could definitely call it my home away from home… or maybe even just ‘home’. I’ve been living here long enough to call it that anyway. No one knew my real identity. Well, no one except my best friend Niall Horan. And I planned to keep it that way. I could trust him with my life. So just like any normal 17 year old, I had to go to school.

No, I don’t.” I retorted back to her, my voice muffled inside the fabric of my pillow. Sometimes this is what we had to go through in the mornings- an ongoing battle to get me out of bed. Our relationship was what you could call, ‘mother-daughter’ since I do consider her like my own mum.

Yes, you do.” She replied, sternly. The banging on the door stopped as I heard her footsteps leave and fade down the hall way.

I pushed myself up from bed. Why do bodies have to be so heavy in the morning? Dragging myself out of bed like a zombie, I stumbled upon my mirror. Running my hands through the strands of my light brown hair, I smiled. Life wasn’t so bad. Yeah, I didn’t live with my parents, but I kind of liked the normal life I was leading here.

“Good morning self,” I sarcastically spoke to my reflection, “you’re looking like a normal seventeen year old today.” With that, I stepped away from my hideous morning reflection and out of my room.

Sometimes, and that wasn’t very often, it was hard to put on a smile. Truth be told, I really did miss my parents. But I have a life down here now and as much as I’d like to move back to the UK, I’d miss it here so much.

“Morning, Soph.” Louis greeted me from down the hallway. He stood on his two feet very tiredly, as he ruffled his brown hair in his own little attempt to wake up.

“Morning,” I murmured back to him. I’m not that much of a morning person. You could say that I got along with Louis just like any other siblings would – he was my brother and I was his sister, and even though we both led a secret life, he still drove me insane sometimes. Since he was just a year older than me, we both attended the same high school.

“I’m driving us to school this morning, okay? I need to pick up Liam on the way.” He informed me. I didn’t really have time to give him an answer as he walked past me and walked down the stairs, sliding his hand along the rail.

“That’s fine!” I called out to him. Louis and I did have our ups and downs, but surely, when it came to looking out for each other, we were both always there. Us two needed to stick together and we had a special bond that was just about unbreakable.

Once we were out the door, Louis got into the driver’s seat of our car and I got into the back. It wasn’t a fancy car, just one to get us around. We may belong to the royal family, but here, no one knows who we truly are. In Australia, we’re just another family who moved when we were young.

When we stopped in front of Liam’s house, he stood up from the porch, swinging his school bag over his shoulder, and headed straight towards the passenger side of the car. Liam was the kind of guy you’d take home to your parents. He easily approved of things and knew how to put a smile on someone’s face.

“Hey, Lou.” He said, smiling, as he opened the door and climbed straight into the car. He shook my brother’s hand, and then turned to me, twisting his body around, “Hey Soph.”

“Hey, Liam.” I smiled back. Liam had been my brother’s friend ever since we had moved here. They got along really well because Liam had also moved to Australia from the UK when he was young. We managed to find a good amount of British people when we got here, so we hung around them.

I had to admit it though; Liam was a really good looking guy. In fact, he was absolutely dreamy. But since I’ve known him for such a long time, he’s like a brother to me. I’d never want to change that and I know the feeling’s mutual.

When we arrived at school, I jumped straight out of the car and started searching for my two special boys. Niall, being my amazing best friend. And Harry, my one and only, if you know what I mean.

I saw those brown curls from a mile away. Something had been playing around in my mind lately – I wanted to tell Harry who I really was. We had been going out for well over two years now and I felt as if it was time. He had the right to know my true identity and I knew I could trust him. It felt good, to trust someone. With my lifestyle, it’s too risky to give away the slightest bit of information. I already knew one person who I could definitely trust – my best friend.

I remember when I had told Niall at the age of 13. He was so sweet about it. He froze for a second, then smiled, ‘Does that mean you can buy a lot more food?’ he had asked me. We laughed and hugged. Ever since then, he had never told a soul my secret and treated me the same. That’s why I was proud to call him my best friend.

“Sophie.” Harry called out when he spotted me. A smile spread across my face when I saw him waiting for me. Though a thought had made it’s way into my head – he never uses my full name – but I decided to forget it.

“Hey, handsome!” I swiftly moved through the students and walked straight up to him, “I want to tell you something.” I stood on my toes and moved in to kiss him, but instead, he moved his head to the side, avoiding my lips.

“Me first.” He looked down at the ground—almost kind of guilty looking. “I um… I have to tell you… I hooked up with Rachel Hughes last week.” He rushed out those last few words.

Well I definitely wasn’t expecting that.

My mind was going a million miles per hour as I was processing all of this. “H-Harry? Is this true? Please tell me you’re joking.” I hesitantly asked. I was so confused. Why in the world would he ever do such a thing to me? To us? It felt like someone had just stabbed a dagger straight through my heart.

“It’s true.” He admitted, sadness in his eyes, “And I’m so sorry, Sophie. It’s just that--“ He stopped mid sentence, looking for words, “Sophie, I just don’t think we’re going to work anymore. We’ve just… grown apart, you see?” He tried explaining. But I didn’t see. I didn’t think any explanation would’ve been good enough.

Harry Styles, my boyfriend of two years, was dumping me. I needed to comprehend all this. Dumping me was one thing, but cheating on me was a completely different thing altogether. I just couldn’t believe it. Something inside me had ticked and I felt weak, making my knees buckle.

“Forget it.” I shook my head at him. Choking back all the tears that were rising, I repeated my words and turned away from him. There was no expectation of him chasing after me, and to be honest, I didn’t want him to. There was only one person on my mind. I had to find Niall.
