Plot:
The year is 2071. Humanity has been pushed to the brink of extinction following the emergence of man-eating monsters called "Aragami" that boast an immunity to conventional weaponry. They ravaged the land, consuming almost everything in their path and leaving nothing in their wake. To combat them, an organization named Fenrir was formed as a last-ditch effort to save humanity through the use of "God Eaters"—special humans infused with Oracle cells, allowing them to wield the God Arc, the only known weapon capable of killing an Aragami. One such God Eater is Lenka Utsugi, a New-Type whose God Arc takes the form of both blade and gun.

Now, as one of Fenrir's greatest weapons, Lenka must master his God Arc if he is to fulfill his desire of wiping out the Aragami once and for all. The monsters continue to be born en masse while the remnants of humanity struggle to survive the night. Only God Eaters stand between the Aragami and complete and total annihilation of the human race.

Opinion: I started this anime, realized it wasn't finished and waited over a year before I rewatched and finished it. But, I can say with certainty that I'm glad I did finish the show. Let me tell you just why I came to love this series. Here's my opinion of the anime God Eater.

So, firstly the plot. I was surprisingly pleased with what the series did with it's plot. Seeing as the theme used is a very common one, my expectations weren't very high from episode one. However, the original twist and tweaks the show had made the story stand out as something more original and enjoyable.

God Eater did a fantastic job with story relevant developments, and blew my expectations away with just what the anime could accomplish in a mere 13 episodes. The anime managed to tell a story of a protagonist as he grows into a warrior with time, simultaneously explaining the condition of the world with episodely flashbacks, and even going into mild depth with the protagonist's past towards the end of the show. And while these were primary concepts of the story they also threw in a psychological theme in regards to the Russian New-Type, gave decent information and development with other, lesser characters and properly displayed issues that took place in this apocalyptic world.

For 13 episodes the anime did a wonderful job at juggling and pacing so many concepts. It never really felt like an introduction to a new element of the story was forced. It was fluid, all the concepts mixing with the base plot and flowing together in a more natural matter. I'm completely convinced this anime deserved a 24 episode status so that it could go even deeper with those concepts and elements, it would have made the show much better. Maybe worth a ten at that point.

I feel the need to commend this anime on it's ability to mess with my emotions and really get me thinking or feeling a certain way. While I didn't shed any tears while I watched the show, there were many instances where I felt as if I would. When it seemed appropriate the series got me angry, it got me saddened or anticipated. The anime was very good at playing with emotions. The one moment in particular that I think deserves the most credit is the death of Lenka's sister during his back story episode.

I had only known his sister for some twenty minutes, not even a full episode. However with the help of time skips and fantastic writing, I developed an almost subconscious attachment to her character. And so when I watched as she confessed her romanized emotions for Lenka before being eaten alive, I was sad. I was angry. I wanted to, and felt like I'd cry at any moment.

The plot of God Eater is badass, entertaining and the story of an anime that deserves much more credit than it gets.

Continuing along, the art and animation of this series was splendid. I loved the character designs. I thought every single character looked awesome in some regard. The only thing I didn't like was the 3-D animation of the Aragami. Not a huge issue, I just really hate 3-D in anime. The animation of the series was very fluid, some of the best. Every single scene was done so well.

Now, I'm not exaggerating when I say this anime has my current favorite soundtrack of all time. The opening was thrilling and awesome! And, while I wasn't a fan of the ending, I absolutely loved how the anime mixed music with the battles, or just the scenes in general. This occurred at least once per episode and it added a new level of greatness to the battles. Some of the inserted songs are the greatest OSTs I've to hear.

Finally, the cast of characters. Well, let me say, I loved them! This series took the time to develop just about everyone, including the side characters. I've already stated how much I loved the episode dedicated to Lenka's past. I do, however, feel like the Russian New-Type was slightly neglected as far as back story goes. Sure, it explains how her parents died and why she was fighting. But I really wanted to learn about her time as a God eater in the Russian branch. I felt like they didn't do enough with her.

I have similar feelings about Kota, simply that they didn't do enough with his character. I did enjoy the explanation behind Soma though. It was a bit sudden, but helped clear up a lot of questions and added a layer of depth to his character.

To sum things up: God eater is one of the best thirteen or less episode series I've ever seen. Hell, it might make my top ten. It has an entertaining and engaging plot, great characters with some awesome developments and an ending that leaves you feeling good. The anime isn't for everyone, but I recommend you all give it a shot. I did and I've come to love it.
