“You look sad,” I whispered.

“I love you,” He answered.

“You’re sad because you love me?” I asked.

“No, I was just thinking. Eventually one of us is going to die.” He said.

“I know, but by the time I die you’re going to be one of those crazy old men who chase people with sticks.” I said.

“You’re going to die first?” he asked, laughing a little.

“Yes, because if you die first I’ll die from a broken heart.” I said. Jace gently pulled my lips to his.

The door opened in the living room and David came strolling into the kitchen. “I ran out of money so I’m borrowing—“

I reached into Jace’s back pocket and threw David his wallet.

“Leave David,” I said.

“My little bunnies are back to normal,” He cheered, before leaving. I pulled away from Jace and looked at him. Something was wrong; I just couldn’t figure it out.

“What’s wrong,” I asked.

“Nothing,” Jace said.

“You’re lying to me,” I said.

“I am not lying to you,” He said. I withdrew his hands from my shirt and crossed my arms.

“I thought you wanted me to trust you? Lying to me is not going to make me trust you.” I said.

“I’ll miss you,” He said.

“Jace, you’re not dying anytime soon. Just don’t think about it,” I said.

“Alright,” He sighed. I kissed his forehead and hopped down from the counter.

Kali’s POV

“Kali, wake up, you have to wake up Kali, wake up!” McKinley shrieked, shaking me. I gasped in pain but she ignored it.

“What’s wrong?” I asked.

“Grace, she’s planning something horrible Kali it’s horrible!” McKinley cried out. I clamped a hand over her mouth.

“If you keep shouting like that she’s going to—“

“Hear you,” Grace finished for me. She placed her thin hands on McKinley’s shoulders.

“You weren’t going to tell her about the surprise were you? No I want tomorrow to be special; I want her to be shocked.” Grace purred.

“Please, please, don’t do it,” McKinley begged.

“Brandon, come get your little girlfriend. She’s causing trouble,” Grace called. Brandon came in and started to direct McKinley out. He looked back at me and shook his head sadly.

“You’re going to kill me tomorrow aren’t you?” I asked.

“Oh no dear, we’re not going to kill you tomorrow. It’s something much better than that. In fact you’ll get to see your family tomorrow. Won’t that be fun? Because tomorrow we’ll get our revenge, and then we’ll be gone.” Grace caressed my cheek.

“Are you hungry dear? I don’t want your mother thinking we didn’t feed you,” Grace said. There was a scary serenity in her voice. It frightened me. I should be happy that I get to see my family tomorrow, but I knew it was a double edged sword. Something worse than me dying was going to happen tomorrow.

Izzy’s POV

That sense of dread filled me that night. I couldn’t sleep. I climbed out of bed avoiding the sleeping figures of Adam and Jace. Someday I would have to tell Adam he was too old to sleep with us, but I couldn’t bear it right now. I stared out the giant window onto the tree covered hill beyond. My eyes fell to the spot we first encountered Clay. I remembered the first time I saw him out the hallway window. He seemed so confused then. Like he wasn’t sure if he should be doing what he was doing. Now he knew. Now he was certain he would ruin our lives forever.

I walked carefully across the floor to avoid waking Jace or Adam up. I went downstairs. The house was dark and quiet. The windows let in a little light. I went into the kitchen and turned on the light. I jumped back against the wall when I saw Kendal sitting on the counter eating ice cream.

“God you scared me,” I said, clutching my heart.

“Sorry, I couldn’t sleep.” He said. I hopped up onto the counter beside him.

“Me neither, I have this horrible feeling that something is going to happen.” I said.

“I’m excited. I have a feeling something good is going to happen.” Kendal said handing me a spoon and holding the ice cream towards me.

“Let’s hope you’re right then,” I said.

“I think Kali’s coming home,” He said. I almost choked on my ice cream.

“How do you know that?” I asked.

“Well lately I was feeling really depressed; now I’m less depressed, but scared too. I just can’t figure out why she’d be scared if she’s coming home.” He said.

“I think you’re taking this twin telepathy to serious,” I said.

“It works all the other times.” He whispered.

“Maybe we’re both going crazy and nothing bad is going to happen. We are going to get Kali back though.” I said. Kendal nodded.

“What are you guys doing?” Jayden asked, coming into the kitchen.

“Not that I’m not happy to see you Jayden, but what are you doing here?” I asked.

“Kendal said I could stay,” He said.

“Sorry, I forgot to ask.” Kendal apologized.

“We were just talking,” I told Jayden.

“About Kali,” He asked.

“Yeah,” I sighed.

“I miss her,” he whispered.

“It’s weird not having her to argue with,” I said. Kendal laughed a little.

“Do you remember that time when were six, she and Jayden decided to run off and get married?” Kendal asked. Jayden and I started laughing then too.

“You guys made it to the end of the driveway before you got too scared and came running back home!” I laughed.

“We weren’t scared; she divorced me because I wouldn’t wear the butterfly ring she gave me.” Jayden said. We all sat in the kitchen laughing and eating ice cream until the sun began to rise.
