Thanks, Dad

Niall slammed the door behind him and didn’t even bother to take his jacket off as he angrily stormed across the room toward your daughter, pointing a finger at her. Her eyes widened and she swallowed hard when Niall came to a stop in front of her. He narrowed his eyes at her and said in a voice that was shaky with anger, “What is wrong with you? Didn’t we talk about this? What did I tell you, hmm? What did I tell you?”

“Dad, I-” She tried, dropping her eyes away from Niall’s intimidating stare. She inhaled a nervous breath and said in a hushed tone, “I just kissed him, that’s all. Nothing else—nothing else happened.”

Niall shook his head and growled, “Don’t lie to me. He was going to take your shirt off, I saw it. You and I both know that something else would have happened had me and your mother not caught you.”

You were upset, no doubt, but Niall was obviously more rattled by the situation than you were. You were fortunate enough to have a daughter that was usually well-behaved. She never really caused much trouble all through her childhood, so you and Niall saw no threat when she became a teenager. But now Niall caught her with her boyfriend that she said she didn’t have, and to say he was furious would be an understatement. Because she was never a troublemaker before this, Niall didn’t really know how to react. Neither of you had much experience with punishing her.

Your daughter nibbled on her lip as her eyes began to water. She knew that her tears were always a weakness for you and Niall, but Niall wasn’t about to cave this time. She wiped at her eyes and turned to you, as if expecting you to save her. But you weren’t exactly pleased with her either. “Why didn’t you tell me you had a boyfriend? This isn’t the way me and dad wanted to find out about him,” You said to her.

She opened her mouth to respond, but Niall interrupted her before she could say anything. “You know, it’s illegal to be havin’ sex at your age,” Niall said to her, raising his eyebrows. “What would you do if he got you pregnant? Do you even know what that would do to your life? You could say goodbye to everything, honey, because there’s no way on this earth me and your mother would support you then. You’d have nothing. You’d have to drop out of school to take care of it, you wouldn’t have any future!”

“Dad!” She shrieked, “I swear, we weren’t doing that! I can’t get pregnant from being kissed!” Her voice was getting louder and more uneven as she spoke, which only caused Niall to get louder. Before you knew it, you were stuck in the middle of a yelling match between your husband and your daughter. Whose side do you take in a situation like that?

“Don’t tell me that!” Niall shouted. “I saw what he was doing! Had me and your mother not been there, he would have kept going and you would have let him, you know why? Because you’re young and you don’t know any better. Because he probably told you he loved you, and how could you resist him then, right? I’ve been young and I’ve been stupid, too. Listen to me; I know what I’m talking about.”

Niall’s hands were curled into fists at his sides, and his chest was heaving as he stared at his daughter. “Boys, especially at your age, will tell you what you want to hear,” Niall said to her, this time in a normal tone. He dropped his eyes and added, “I don’t want you to make mistakes that you’ll regret later.” It was coming clear now that Niall was so overwhelmed with fear; the only way he could think to react was to be angry. He thought that maybe if he showed her how serious he was about this, she’d understand better. Maybe if he intimidated her, she’d listen.

He turned to walk away, and as he did, he slid his arms out of his jacket. He kicked his shoes off and hung his jacket up, pausing when he heard your daughter quietly say, “Thanks, Dad.”
