“Hello?” You said into your phone, surprised to see that Niall was calling you.

“Oh thank goodness,” He sighed with relief at the sound of your voice. You furrowed your eyebrows as you heard cries in the background.

“Niall? Is everything okay?” You worried, stepping out of the store you were in so you could hear more clearly. You tightly held the phone to your ear.

“Jolien, I’ve tried everything,” Niall breathed, clearly stressed out about something. “The baby has been crying ever since you left and I can’t get her to stop. I don’t know what to do.”

“Maybe she’s hungry?” You suggested, feeling bad for Niall. When he said he tried everything, you knew he wasn’t exaggerating. You also knew how much it bothered Niall when his baby was crying.

“Tried that,” He groaned as the baby screamed, sobbing uncontrollably. “She won’t stop! I don’t know what I did! And now she’s screaming! Jolien, can you please come home?” He pleaded, as he repositioned the baby in his arms.

“Sure, honey,” You said, already on the way to your car. “Do you want me to stay on the phone with you?”

“You know I’d love that,” Niall said. “But you’ll be driving and I want you to be safe. Thanks for coming, princess.”

He hung up and you smiled before hurrying on your way home. You found yourself feeling quite nervous as you waited impatiently at a particularly long traffic light. Waiting for the light to change, your fingers tapped along the steering wheel and you bit your lip. The ride home seemed to take longer than usual, even though you were in a hurry. Once you arrived back home, you quickly made your way to the door, unlocking it and letting yourself in, to see Niall on the floor with the baby in his hands. He was lying on his back, holding her in the air above him, trying his best to cheer her up.

“Baby,” You cooed, carefully taking your little girl from Niall’s grip. “What’s wrong?”

You patted her back lightly, holding her on your shoulder as Niall stood, brushing his hands on his pants. He let out a deep breath, running his hands though his hair as your baby finally stopped crying in your arms. You could see he was bothered as he left the room, without a word. You paced around the room until your baby fell asleep, and you gently placed her in her crib for a much needed nap.

After she was settled, you went off to find Niall. He was in your shared bedroom, his head in his hands. A small whimper left his lips and you knew he was crying. Frowning, you sat down next to him. He looked up, not expecting your presence. His eyes were red and his face was tear-stained.

“She was just tired,” You said quietly while soothingly rubbing his back, hoping it would help to calm him.

He shook his head and looked away. “My own daughter cries for hours when I’m holding her, and then you come home, and the second she’s in your arms, she stops. What does that mean?” He turned to look at you, his eyes flickering between your eyes and your hand that was placed on his shoulder.

“Niall,” You whispered, resting your forehead against his. “It means absolutely nothing. She was just grumpy and needed a nap, it’s nothing you did. She would have done the same thing to me, had she not been completely exhausted by the time I got home.”

“I want to be a perfect dad for her,” He said, taking your hand in his and rubbing circles into your palm with his thumb. He looked into your eyes and swallowed hard. “I want to protect her and be there for her.”

“And that’s exactly what you’re doing! Niall, you’re already a perfect father for her. You’re everything she needs to look up to. She’s too young to have any clue as to how lucky she is to have you as her dad now. But when she gets older, trust me, she’ll be more than grateful for you. I’m so proud of you,” You said, lightly pecking his lips.

“Where would I be if I didn’t have you?” He said with a smirk before placing his hand behind your neck and smiling at you.

“Good question,” You said with a laugh.
