Distance

A frustrated sigh left your lips as you fumbled with the key in your hand, trying to position it in the lock correctly. You were frustrated, tired, and fed up with having to lug an extremely heavy book bag around campus. So far, college was't everything you expected it to be. If anything, it was quite the opposite of that ideal image in the brochures. And, to make it worse, you were certain that you were the only student on campus that felt this way. Everyone else, including your roommate, seemed to be gleefully prancing through the first semester of their freshman year, while you were still struggling to cross the campus in time to make it to your next class.

Upon finally stumbling through the door, you were greeted with your considerably disappointing dorm room. It was misleading in the sense that it wasn't as spacious as it appeared online, and neither you nor your roommate had many finances left to put toward decorating. The only touch of personality in your room was the corner where your bed was, in which you'd taped a bunch of pictures of you and your boyfriend on the wall. You noticed them every time you returned to your room - for two reasons. One of those reasons being that it was the only part of the wall that wasn't a drab white color, so it stuck out like a sore thumb. And the second reason being that you often needed a reason to smile, and no matter how awful you were feeling, Niall was always a reason to smile. That's why the distance between you and him was one of the hardest obstacles you had to overcome while attending college. And, thus far, you had yet to overcome it. You still spent late night hours on the phone with him, dreading the moment you'd have to end the call. You still curled up on your bed and stared at those pictures, eventfully breaking down in tears when you realized all that you were missing. You still kept his 'Wisconsin Badgers' t-shirt close to you, simply because you loved to inhale his scent and remember him when you felt lonely.

You tossed your keys on your desk and dropped your book bag to the floor with a loud thud. Your roommate wasn't around, which didn't really surprise you. Your eyebrows furrowed as you spotted a basket on your bed, certainly looking out-of-place. As you sat down beside it, you recognized the handwriting scribbled across the note that hung from the basket handle. Lifting the note, which hung by a piece of pink ribbon, you smiled uncontrollably as you read its message.

My love,

I know you're thinking about me, and I'm thinking about you too. All the time, it seems. I can't pick up my favourite snapback without thinking about how sexy you look in it ;) I can't see a jar of peanut butter without remembering that time I dared you to eat an entire jar in one sitting. I can't cuddle up with a pillow at night, without realizing how uncomfortable I am when you aren't at my side. I want so badly to hold you and have a face-to-face conversation about your first month at university, or to even hold your hand. I miss how perfectly our hands mold together. I want nothing more than to be with you right now, yet we aren't even in the same country.

Just know that I miss you more than anything in this world. Though there's distance between us, always know that I'm constantly thinking about you, and it would be impossible for me to forget you. Know that I'm still protecting you, from afar. I'll be with you soon, babe, and when that happens - we'll have a hell of a lot to catch up on, won't we? XD

(p.s- In this basket is some stuff that I know you need)

You caught your bottom lip between your teeth as you pushed the tissue paper aside, revealing a box of chocolates and two giant posters of Niall for your dorm walls. You laughed as you saw those, because before you left, Niall did promise that he'd send you some posters to spruce up your room. You thought he was kidding! You crumpled the tissue paper up, stopping when you discovered that you'd forgotten something in the bottom of the basket. It was a small white jewelry box, and you squealed in excitement when you saw it. Niall always went above and beyond for you. You lifted the lid from the little box, gasping when you were met with a beautiful necklace. It had a silver chain, and a silver pendant made of two hearts that overlapped in the middle. One heart had a 'N' initial in it, while the other heart had your initial in it. You felt your emotions catching in your throat as you carefully pulled the necklace out of the box.
