Delayed Flight

You found an isolated seat with a perfect view of the doors, where you could wait for Niall to come through them. You leaned back in your chair and crossed your legs, keeping your eyes locked on the door, in fear that you might miss him if you were to look away. Every time the doors opened to let someone through, you felt your heart stopping. This could be Niall, you thought, this has got to be him. But each time, you were disappointed.

You had been sitting in that same spot for so long that you were starting to wonder if you’d missed him. The large windows in the airport weren’t letting light in anymore, as it was past sunset. The sky was darker now, but you could still see the planes landing and taking off. You’d watched the airport get hectic and quite busy, but now the activity was starting to die down. You’d seen several people come by, and all of them had left now, except for you. Your phone was sitting still in your lap as you waited to hear something from Niall. You’d texted him a few times and hadn’t gotten a single response. Though you knew your phone would go off if you were to get a message, you kept checking it just to make sure you hadn’t missed anything.

Over time, you could feel yourself slowly losing patience. The airport wasn’t the most comfortable place to be hanging out in for an extended amount of time, and you hadn’t eaten since before you left your house. You were planning to get home hours ago, with Niall, where you would enjoy a nice dinner together. That plan, obviously, would not work so well anymore. You were tired, hungry, and bored to tears in this airport that only seemed to feel lonelier as seconds passed. Not to mention that you were still incredibly anxious to be with your boyfriend, whom you hadn’t seen in just over a few months.

There were some places in the airport where you could buy food. Though everything was outrageously priced, you knew you needed to eat something. Especially because you still weren’t sure how much longer you’d be there. You bought yourself a few snacks and a bottle of water. You unscrewed the cap and took a long sip of water while making your way back to the spot that you had claimed for yourself hours ago. Your jacket and the few items that you brought along were comfortably planted near your seat.

After finishing off all of your snacks, still with no reply from Niall, you shoved your phone in your pocket and brought yourself to your feet. You couldn’t sit in that seat any longer; you’d go crazy. You needed to get up and walk around for a while, maybe find something to busy yourself. For a second, you considered packing your stuff up and just heading home, but you knew you couldn’t do that. Niall’s flight was still listed as delayed and you knew that if you left, he’d have no way of getting home. He’d have to call you or someone else to come get him anyway, so you knew you’d might as well just stick around and wait for him. Holding your water bottle in one hand and your phone in the other, you paced back and forth along the windows.

Eventually, you grew tired of doing that, too, so you found your way back to your seat. You leaned back and folded your arms across your chest. Somewhere along the line, your exhaustion took the best of you. You hadn’t had much sleep recently, seeing as you found it difficult to rest the night before, knowing that it would only be a matter of hours before Niall would be with you again. So now, settled in the same seat, you couldn’t help but to let your eyes close and doze off for a while. You were fortunate enough to catch almost an hour of sleep before you were pulled from the dream you were having.

You felt your body being moved as someone took your hand into theirs. The hand was warm and gently squeezed yours. You slowly blinked your eyes open, letting a squeal leave your lips when you turned to see Niall softly grinning back at you. He whispered, “Hey, princess.” You jumped up from your spot, overtaken by relief. At last, he was there. Within a second, all of your exhaustion was shed from you. You were overjoyed now, and couldn’t think about sleep even if you had to. “Niall!” You squealed. Your hands flew to cover your face as a few happy tears slipped from your eyes. Seeing him, right in front of you, where you could touch him and kiss him, felt just as energizing as you thought it would. He sprung to his feet, too, and enveloped you in his arms. You hid your face in his chest, letting your tears spill onto his shirt as he tightly wrapped his arms around you. You felt his warmth surround you, you could hear his heartbeat—it was a feeling that you had missed so badly.

You sniffled and inhaled a sharp breath, pulling yourself away from him to see his face. He was still smiling, as if that smile was plastered to him. He, too, had a few tears in his eyes. You took his face in your hands, gently stroking his skin. His eyes danced with yours for a while. You smiled a little and stood on the tips of your toes, leaning up to press your lips to his. You pecked him for just a second. You pulled away to lock your eyes with his again before bringing your lips back to his. His hands fell at your waist and his eyelids fluttered shut. You wrapped your arms around his neck and titled your head, as to deepen the kiss.

Niall pulled apart first this time, but only because he needed to breathe. He inhaled a sharp breath, followed by a chuckle of pure joy. He squeezed you close again, before letting you pull away. You wiped the last tears from your eyes and stood back to admire him. “I’ve been here all day,” You said with a small laugh, “What took you so long?”

He inhaled another deep breath and shook his head with a giggle. “I missed my first flight, and then the second one was really delayed.” He picked up his bags off the floor and looked at you to say, “And my phone died before I even made it to the airport, so I never go to call you about it. I didn’t have the charger with me. I’m so sorry. But, look how lucky I am! I literally have the best girlfriend in the world. No one else would sit in a boring airport all day to wait for me.”

You grinned and said, “It was worth it. I’m so glad you’re here.”

He smiled and stared at you for a minute before saying, “Me too. I missed my lovely (Y/N) so much.” You shyly dropped your eyes to the floor, wanting to run into his arms again, but he had his bags in his hands. “Why don’t we head home now? I’ll go in and drop my stuff off and then I want to take you out for a late dinner.” You grabbed your stuff and linked your arm with Niall’s, pleased to finally be at his side again.

You ended up enjoying a wonderful night with Niall, full of lots of cuddling (and maybe a few other things) once you got home.
