You made your way through the busy hallways, making no attempt in talking to anybody. It wasn't like anybody really wanted to talk, anyway.

You were in a hurry to get to class on time, a tardy would be the end of the world for you.

You entered the class, finding your spot to sit. After setting your books down, and getting all situated, you heard that awful sound.

The jocks.

They're nice to look at and everything, but they are complete jerks to everyone who isn't a jock. Which means you. And you were well aware of the things they said about you. "Nerd" was just the start of it.

You folded your legs and sat straight, trying to avoid them as much as possible.

"Nice skirt ya got there, nerd," One of them commented as they passed you.

You rolled your eyes, ignoring them as much as you could. You could hear giggles coming from girls in the room, making you sick to your stomach.

"Oh no, did I make you feel bad?" He joked, kneeling down next to you and poking your cheek. You squirmed away, giving him the evil eye.

"Don't touch me," You muttered.

"Don't what? Sorry, I didn't hear you, sweetheart," He said, with a nasty tone to his voice.

More girls giggled and you turned away from him.

"What's your name, nerd?" He asked, he just wouldn't give up.

You rolled your eyes again, shaking your head and refusing to answer him.

"Her name is Gena," Another girl squeaked, twirling a strand of her blonde locks around her finger.

You groaned as your identity was no longer hidden. So much for that idea.

"Gena, huh? How many books did you read last night?" He chuckled. "Did you study?!" You held your temper together and continued to ignore him.

"Don't ignore me, Gena. Everybody knows you're a nerd!"

And at that moment you felt like crying. You'd been taking crap like that from people your entire life, and yet it continued.

"Aw, don't cry," He said with fake sympathy. "You'll find another nerd someday. And then you won't be lonely."

You were about to get up and smack the kid when you noticed another jock approach this one.

"Hey," The new one said, tapping his buddy's shoulder. "Leave her alone."

"Excuse me? You been smokin' something, bro?" The other one laughed, standing up.

"I said, leave her alone. She hasn't done anything to you."

"So, what is this? You trying to be a hero, Niall?" The other one smirked.

Niall was his name. You'd seen Niall around, but he'd never stood up for you before.

"No, I just think you should back off of her. She doesn't need some idiot like you in her life," Niall growled, stepping forward and reaching for your hand.

You took it out of surprise and followed him as he led you away from the huddle of kids that had formed. He gently rubbed your hand and sat down next to you in another corner of the room.

"I'm sorry about him," He smiled at you. "He's stupid."

You giggled. "Uh...who...why are you being nice to me?" You asked.

"I'm tired of seeing him mess with you," Niall told you. "I'm Niall, if you were wondering."

You giggled again. "I know who you are. I'm...Ge-"

"Gena," He smiled, cutting you off. "I know."

"Oh."

"Would you mind if I sit next to you for the rest of this class?" Niall asked, winking at you.

You felt weak at your knees, thank goodness you were sitting. "I wouldn't mind at all," You smiled.
