You and Legolas have sent dozens of letters in the past years, but now, the two of you will make the most of the time you have now that you are together.
You and Legolas had met during one of the feasts in Mirkwood and had stayed in touch ever since. Your relationship had been strictly platonic at first. But as the two of you had met a decade later, your feelings had flared, and you had been lovers ever since. You couldn't see each other very often, to both of your disappointment, but you had made it work. You wrote each other a lot of letters.
By some miracle, the two of you managed to hide your relationship from your parents for quite a while. Your father had found out first, but the only thing he knew for sure was that you were exchanging letters with someone, but he had no idea who it was. Every time Lindir delivered you another letter, the adviser tried to pry out the name of the elf that had stolen your heart but with no success. He was no doubt working on the orders of your father, and therefore, you always refused to tell him. This annoyed your father to no end. You were the younger of his daughters, and now that Arwen had left him to live with Aragorn in Gondor, he wanted to hang onto his youngest daughter for a while longer.
To your knowledge, Thranduil was yet to find out. And you were happy about that. Neither Legolas nor you wanted to deal with the commotion that was going to start when your relationship would be brought to light. Two royals in a relationship, both on the line to the thrones of their respected kingdoms, would cause an uproar. Both of you knew that the moment was coming eventually, but you still wanted to stretch the moment on for as long as you possibly could. Sneaking around made the two of you feel like you were elflings again. You two could live in your little bubble, without the pressure of your kingdoms or fathers resting on your shoulders. You could just be yourselves, and it was liberating.

The feast was loud as people talked and laughed, having to raise their voices over the music of the musicians that were playing. You frowned, turning your head towards the hallway you could swear you heard someone calling your name. You excused yourself from the group you had been conversing with, pretending to walk towards a waiter but when you saw their eyes shift away from you, you ducked into the hiding space a pillar offered. It was silent for a moment, and you gave a small shake of your head, disappointed. You scolded yourself for such hopeful thoughts, now thinking that it was just the wind playing tricks with your ears. You had already taken a few steps towards the hall, and with the music and the steady hum of conversation, you heard it again. This time, it was slightly louder, and you slowly walked toward the hallway you thought it was coming from. The echo made it harder to locate the exact spot. As you threaded deeper into the hallway, nerves were starting to nip at your fingertips. It was dimly lit, just a few softly burning torches lighting your way. The sounds of the feast were getting further away, and for a moment, you worried that would you be able to make your way back.
That was quickly erased as you were pulled into the hallway that was completely covered in darkness. You almost screamed before you were pressed against a wall and you could see who had grabbed you. Your eyes met a pair of blue ones, glowing mischievously.
"Legolas, you almost gave me a heart attack." You released a deep breath, placing your arms to rest on his shoulders. It felt impossibly good to be in his company again, to have his hands gently tracing your sides, the warmth of his skin transferring through the thin fabric of your dress onto yours.
"I apologize," Legolas muttered, leaning forward.
"Is there-" He pressed a kiss to your forehead, his words tickling your skin.
"Anything-"
"I can do-"
"To make it up to you?" You giggled as he whispered the last words against your lips, his forehead resting on yours, the softness of his lips barely brushing yours.
"I am sure you can think of something." You meant your tone to be teasing, but the words escaped you in a breathless whisper instead, the proximity of the one you loved overwhelming your mind.
With a small movement, Legolas captured your lips with his, drawing you in for a slow, passionate kiss. It was a kiss that had been long coming, and your arms wrapped around his shoulders as you pulled him closer to you. Your breaths got heavier the longer you kissed, but neither of you wanted to pull away, too enraptured. The feeling of being together again welled around the two of you, encasing the two of you and adding heat to the already deep kiss.
You pulled apart, forehead against forehead, chest against heaving chest, breaths mingling together. You let out a breathy laugh, trying to catch your breath. The other kiss caught the two of you by surprise even if both of you dive in at the same time, lips pressing against one another gently this time. This kiss was filled with feeling, the longing covered slowly by overwhelming love, the feel of his lips chasing away the ghosting loneliness in your heart. It was light and gentle, and it was perfect.
As the two of you separated again, Legolas smiled at you, sliding his nose on your skin.
"Did you get my letters?" He asked, his nose now resting against yours as the two of you caught your breaths after the kiss.
"Of course I did." You assured him, and dove in for another kiss, not wanting to waste another moment now that he was really there for you to touch and kiss. You had exchanged hundreds of letters during the time you hadn't been able to see each other, but none of them could ever compare to the feeling you had now, resting against his chest, your lips dancing on his.
Legolas reached inside his jacket and pulled out a flower. It was slightly bunched up, the petals bent against each other, but you barely noticed.
"Thank you," You whispered, pressing a kiss to his lips as you took it from him with a bright smile. It was a pink carnation, your favorite. Ever since you had told him, he had started sending you pressed and dried carnations in his letters, in every color he could find. You always waited with excitement when you received one of his letters, waiting to see what color of a flower he had found this time. But when it was an important occasion, your conception day, or the anniversary of your relationship, he would send you a pink one, like the one you were holding right now. Most people tended to think that carnations were a "cheap" flowers or even a weed, but you had always found them beautiful. Their sweet scent was alluring but not too strong, and you always kept a fresh bouquet in your room. But mostly, they just reminded you of Legolas.
Oneshot inspired by a picture for a change. I saw the carnations and I knew I had to write about them, they were so prettily colored.
