The army returns, and you anxiously wait if Dwalin will return with them.
You pace back and forth in your kitchen, quietly cursing the commands that didn't allow you to go and greet your husband when he arrived in the kingdom. According to the acting queen, lady Dís, it would cause unnecessary mayhem. She was right, of course, but it still annoyed you to just sit in your house and wait for him to arrive. It had been two weeks since the letter from the army had arrived, stating that the army was coming home, and everyone, you included, had been waiting for their return ever since.
The scouts had spotted them this morning and had estimated that they would arrive in the kingdom just after sundown. You had been trying to pass the time since you had woken, every passing moment felt longer than the last. You had baked all kinds of treats, varying from bread to biscuits, you had cleaned your house from top to bottom, you had washed every dirty piece of clothing, and still, you were left pacing in your dress as you waited for the minutes to pass. Sighing, you rubbed your face with your hands, trying to stay positive. The letter had said that many dwarfs had fallen, including the king, but you refused to believe that Dwalin was dead. He had promised to come back.
The sun had completely sunken under the horizon, and you had given up the pacing and were now sitting next to the fireplace with a book in hand, desperately trying to entertain yourself and keep the bad thoughts at bay. Every time you heard a happy squeal outside your heart jumped, but you forced yourself to sit in the chair. Your eyes scanned the pages without understanding anything, and you sighed and closed your eyes, and leaned your head against the back of the armchair. You stood up, meaning to walk into your bedroom to fetch the sock you had been knitting when a knock sounded on the door.
You stiffened and turned your face to the door but didn't walk up to it to open it yet. There were two options. One: it was Dwalin, coming home as he had promised, or Two: it was a guard of the kingdom, here to tell you of your beloved's passing. Only now the reality of Dwalin's possible death was seeping in, and it was terrifying. The knock sounded again, and you took a few, slow steps toward it. You grabbed the handle but took three, long stable breaths in before you yanked the door open.
"Dwalin!" You shrieked and jumped into his neck, making him drop his bags and weapons so he could catch you. His lips collided with yours, and you wrapped your arms around his neck tightly. The kiss was feverish, every ounce of fear leaving you as his lips danced against yours. You pulled away from each other, panting, but you stayed nose to nose.
"So good to see ya, love." Dwalin's words came out in a huff as he tried to even his breath, his lips brushing yours. You pulled him against your lips again, allowing yourself to get lost in the familiar feeling.
Dwalin hummed and kissed your forehead as he squeezed you to his chest, taking a breath of your scent. You smelled like home, like freshly baked bread, cookies, and soap, unlike the harsh smells of the wild.
"Let's get married. Tomorrow." He spoke against your hair, and you pulled back so you could see his face.
"Dwalin..." Your words trailed off, sliding your fingers against the exposed skin of his arms.
"I don't need anythin' but ya. None of that fancy business, the flowers or anythin'." You let out a small sigh and grabbed his hands.
"Dwalin, you know I love you, but..." You had dreamed of a big wedding since you had been a little girl. You wanted to get married more than anything, but you wanted a big wedding, you wanted flowers and musicians.
"Ya don't want to get married?" The heartbreak in his voice shattered your heart, and you grabbed his face between your hands.
"No! I want to get married, more than anything! But... It's just that I have dreamed of a big wedding since I was a child, and..." You trailed off, dropping your hands from his face to look away and twist your fingers. You knew everyone knew that Dwalin was not the kind of person that liked crowds, but your dream had kept it in your heart.
"I know it's silly, I know you don't like crowds and-" You were cut off by a gentle kiss, Dwalin's eyes gentle as he pulled away.
"If ya want a big weddin', love, we'll have a big weddin'. I don't care, as long as I get to marry ya." You smiled as his arms wrapped around you and he placed yet another kiss on your lips.
"I can't wait to marry you, but my dreams are insistent."
"And I will make sure that
everything is as ya dreamed. I promise." He muttered, his lips pressing into your cheek as tucked your nose under his jaw, cherishing the warmth of his chest against yours.
You backed away from him and leaned down to pick up his bag, but he grabbed it before you could. The weapons hanging from it cranked against each other as he hoisted them on his shoulder, allowing you to pull him inside. He placed the bag down as you closed the door behind him, the mouthwatering smell reaching his nose as you slipped into the kitchen.
"You must be starving, I made your favorite."
I finally finished this one! I was a little lost about where to go with it, but motivation struck when I was listening to an online lecture and I might have written this instead of listening to the rest of it. But I can revise things later, luckily, so no harm done.
