The company wasn't happy. They had had a run-in with a group of bandits and now most of their weapons were in dire need of repair as they were either dull or broken. Luckily, Dwalin told them that he knew a place, and refused to say anything else, even if all the others, even Thorin, asked him.
"You'll see when we get there." He answered, and Balin shook his head, smiling at his brother's secrecy.
"Do you know something about this, Balin?" Thorin turned to the older dwarf in the hopes of some answers, but Balin just shook his head.
"It's not my place to tell you." Thorin stared at him in disbelief.
"But Balin..." Balin shook his head.
"You will see in time, Thorin. You will see." He smiled knowingly, and Thorin huffed, walking towards the start of the group where Dwalin was leading them.
"Keep your secrets."
"We're here." Dwalin declared and he stopped in front of a low fence on a sturdy stone house in a small village. The company frowned but followed Dwalin as he opened the gate. They walked along the path to a sturdy wooden door and watched Dwalin knocked three times. A young male dwarf came to the door.
"Oh, masted Dwalin. I did not expect to see you here so soon. Is there something you n-" His words were cut off by a bright squeal that caused the dwarves to cringe and a small figure wearing a bright red dress stormed out the door and latched into Dwalin's leg, giggling wildly.
"Hello, my rose." Dwalin greeted the figure warmly, and the company exchanged glances. They had never heard Dwalin speak so softly.
"I missed you papa!" The figure squeaked and hugged Dwalin's leg tighter while she waved happily at Balin. The company stared at them, wide-eyed. Papa? Dwalin was a FATHER?
The initial joy of seeing your father had subsided and it had been replaced with the fear that he would go away again.
"Y/N, my rose, ya need to let go of my leg so we can go inside." Dwalin tried to coax the tiny dwarf to let go of his leg, but you shook your head violently, eyes brimming with tears.
"I promise, rose, I am not going anywhere. Just let go of my leg and I can get us inside." Again, you shook your head violently.
"No." You squeaked and tightened your hold as the first tears rolled on your cheeks. When Dwalin noticed your tears, he immediately sat down, even if it was difficult as you were tightly latched to his leg. He opened his arms to welcome you for a hug.
"Come 'ere, my darling rose." You immediately let go and blunged to his chest. You clutched his shirt in your hands as he wrapped his arms around you.
"I know ye don't like it when I go away, but it's my job to protect Thorin." You whined and curled into a tighter ball to be closer to him but your crying was ceasing.
"But Thoan and Garla have been nice to you, ye? They will keep good care of ya until I get back. This journey is very important, and I need to go with Thorin to help him." You nodded but you were still sad as you knew he was leaving again soon.
"Now come, let's go eat before the others devour it all." He stood up and carried you inside.
You had made it inside and there had been plenty of food left for the both of you as the company was still in a sort of a shock that Dwalin had a child. They had recovered from their shock quite quickly, especially as you had kept calling Dwalin "papa" and Balin "uncle" and they were now chatting and laughing amongst themselves. Dwalin stared at his plate with squinted eyes. He had had six cookies. Now there were only four. He knew no one of the company dared to take them, so he just figured he had already eaten them and he took a drink of his ale. When he placed the tankard down, there was again one cookie more missing, now only three remained. He noticed Fili and Kili smirking, but before he could accuse them of eating his cookies, he noticed that you had crumbs on your dress. He turned to you more and noticed that you had your mouth stuffed full of something.
"Y/N, did you take my cookies?" He asked you, knowing full well that you did. You shook your head furiously as your cheeks were too full for you to speak.
"Are you sure?" He asked, and you swallowed and nodded.
"Yes." Then, you went back to eating. Dwalin shook his head and continued to, and Fili's and Kili's eyes widened as they realized that he didn't react at all to your cookie-theft. If it had been them, they would have gotten their asses beaten to the next week.
As the dinner continued, you started to get over your shyness and you started to ask them all kinds of questions. They all answered you, but they were too engrossed in their conversations to talk to you more, and you were a little down as you realized that no one really wanted to talk to you. Even your father was talking with Thoan and Garla with a slight frown on his face. You noticed that Bilbo was sitting alone, so you went to him.
"Why are your feet so big?" You asked him, and he smiled warmly at you.
"I am a hobbit, we have big feet." You stared at him for a moment but nodded and climbed into the chair next to him.
"Did you get into trouble when you were little?" You asked him, and he nodded, smiling slightly at the memory.
"Many times, but you don't want to hear about-" He cut himself off as you were watching him with big eyes filled with excitement. So, he cleared his throat and started.
"I went looking for elves in the nearby forest..."
After Bilbo had finished your story, you giggled and clapped your hands.
"That was a good story, I liked the part about the prank." You giggled and glanced at his feet.
"Why aren't you wearing shoes?" Bilbo let out a small laugh.
"I don't need shoes." You frowned at this but then smiled.
"I like to wear shoes, they are comfortable. And you can do something fun with them too. Wanna see?" You asked him, and he nodded.
"Of course." You smiled mischievously and stood up.
"Wait a moment." You walked up to the table and when no one was watching, you slipped under it and stayed there for a moment before sneaking out again. You returned next to Bilbo.
"Watch." You said to him before you walked under a shelf that held a wooden horse.
"Papa, can you hand that to me. I can't reach." You whined, and he turned around and nodded.
"Of course, darl-" His words were cut off as he fell as his shoelaces had been tied together. You started giggling loudly, and everyone laughed, the loudest being Fili and Kili. Even Thorin couldn't keep a straight face and you pattered to Bilbo, who was smiling widely.
"Was it funny?" Your eyes were shining, and Bilbo smiled at you.
"Very funny. I kind of hope that we had had shoelaces in Hobbiton when I was a child."
Ugh, I had serious trouble writing this. First, I have not written anything but school papers in like a month, and I do them in Finnish (my native language) so returning to English is always hard.
I knew what I wanted to write, I just couldn't find the words to do it. But thanks to Google translate and a little bit of moral support from a friend (Erikaaaz ) I did it!
