Battle. It was all you ever knew. It was the one reason you did not hesitate to join the Company. You didn't regret it for a second, not until you and the dwarves were suddenly surrounded by a entourage of elves that aimed their arrows to your heads.

"Don't think I will hesitate to kill you, Dwarf." You recognised that voice. It was a struggle pushing through the swarm of dwarves but, with a pounding heart, you managed to get yourself to the front only to see a familiar face aiming his arrow at Thorin.

"Legolas." You breathed, a lightness in your voice but it was too overthrown by your suprise.

The elf turned to you, brows furrowed. "Do we know one another?" He asked gruffly, a brow raised. Suddenly you shook your head realising your had your hood raised, you let it fall.

"Kiyriel?" He said, wide eyed.

Thorin's gaze shifted to you and you ignored his glare.

"You know the elf?" He snapped.

You turned to him and raised a brow. "I have been on this Earth many years, Thorin. I know many people of all beings. Legolas happens to be one of them." You didn't have time for his coldness right now, his stupidity had gotten you all lost in the first place.

You turned to Legolas, smiling. "It has been a long time, my friend. Is your Ada well?"

A soft smile touched Legolas' lips. "He is. Come, I will take you to him, yet he may question why you find yourself in the company of dwarves."

"Do not worry, I too have questioned that many times." Thorin growled at you and you swore you heard Kili snicker behind you. You had gotten along with the dwarves. You were a Ranger of old and had been on Middle Earth for many years, growing up on the road. The dwarves had taken a liking to your knowledge of mystical beasts, including dragons. And you had helped them, fighting and slaying orcs and goblins and wolves. But you hadn't expected to face elves.

Legolas had led you and the Dwarves to the King's throne room. The pathway swerved through a dark yet warm hugh that hung in the air and hugged the branch like throne.

A tall elf elegantly positioned himself on his throne and when his eyes met yours in the crowd you couldn't miss his features twitch. Composing himself, he looked away and focused his attention on the dwarves.

"Take them to the cells, leave this one with me." Before Legolas could speak the guards had grabbed the dwarves and Thranduil rose. "Leave her too."

You tried not to roll your eyes. He was still so blunt.

After Thorin and Thranduil had finished their on going row you felt your heart beat fast. You hadn't said anything, not wanting to interfere. You hadn't joined the company to be diplomatic, you had joined it to fight.

Thorin was grabbed and yanked away. You couldn't ignore the pain in Thranduil's eyes. The dwarf had questioned his honour. Not a smart move with the Elven king.

His eyes snapped to yours and you heard Legolas' footsteps shy away behind the doors.

"I have not seen you for many years, Kiyriel." He breathed, rising, his gaze wavering as he tried to blink away a sadness.

You stepped forward allowing him to embrace you, and for once a smile touched your lips. "I had a duty to perform to protect this realm, Thranduil." He squeezed you tighter at the wound of his name.

"I have missed you greatly. I have not looked upon you since you left these halls to join the Rangers of the North."

You pulled back, looking up to him. "I know," you whispered, "it has been so incredibly long. I'm sorry I had to leave you but I couldn't leave them to fend for themselves."

He gazed at you softly. "Do you ever stop fighting?" He asked, holding you.

"It is the fighters that survive." You breathed.

He smiled slightly at that, even though you could have easily missed it. "You're loyalty to your people is something I greatly admire, I just wish you did not have to sacrifice so much."

And you had. You had left the one place you had felt you belonged, the people you loved, the elf you loved. Mirkwood had been the most beautiful place you had ever seen on your travels. But the forest you had stepped in was no longer as green and flourishing. Yet these halls hadn't aged a day.

"But I am here, for now." You mumbled that last part but you knew he heard it when he looked away.

"I wish you could stay forever. C-can you not?"

Your brows frowned. "No Thranduil. I have a duty to oversee this escapade of the Durin line. I'm sure you pieced this all together the moment you saw me." A soft, knowing smile touched your lips.

"You know me well." He smiled sadly.

Your eyes lingered on his then you gently gripped his arms. "For now, let us enjoy this." You said.

He drew you back to him. "Any moment with you is moment enough, my love."
