Third person
First grade. Virgil was scared out of his mind, he had just moved schools due to a bullying issue that was getting out of hand, and he had no clue what to expect. He hugged his moms legs tightly.
"Mommy I don't wanna go"
"Come on honey, first days are always the hardest, I'm sure you'll make plenty of friends!"
"I wanna go home with you!"
"I'll make you a deal-"
She softly pulled him off her legs, crouching down to his level.
"You have to try your hardest to make at least one friend okay? And if you don't, you can have and extra hour of computer time at home tonight."
Virgil's eyes lit up, making his mom let bright smile spread onto her face.
"Pinkie promise!"
He held out his pinky, bouncing on his heels.
"Pinkie promise-"
Their pinkies latched and they shared a smile.
"-now, go on and go make a friend okay?"
"Okay mommy!"
She smiled as she watched her small brown haired son walk more confidently than ever to the school.
Time skip to lunch
Virgil walked with his class to get their lunch, standing at the back of the line with his head down.
"Hey there!"
A sudden, loud voice chirped behind him. He jumped, turning around quickly, trying to hide his face as much as possible to see a small boy, a little taller than him wearing a white shirt with red stripes.
"H-hi..."
"You're new here, right?"
Virgil looked up more now, fighting his instinct to hide his face.
"Yeah..."
"I'm Roman! Who are you?"
"Virgil..."
"Virgil? That's an awesome name!"
Virgil's eyes glanced down for a moment, not used to such nice comments.
"Thanks..."
"You look lonely, do you wanna join me and my friends for lunch?"
Virgil made eye contact with the boy, his smile was bright and showed nothing but joy, and Virgil couldn't help but let a soft smile spread to his face too.
"Sure"
Roman excitedly grabbed Virgil's hand, completely forgetting to get their food, and pulled him towards a small table where two more boys sat. One wore a happy expression and a light blue shirt that had a small cat on the shoulder, the other wore a more serious face that still had a small smile and a dark blue shirt. Roman sat down and patted the seat next to him, signaling for Virgil to sit with him. He gladly did so as his new friend started introducing him.
"Guys! Meet my new friend Virgil! He just moved here!"
The one wearing the light blue shirt smiled brightly, waving his tiny hand as fast as possible.
"Hello! I'm Patton, but you can call me Pat!"
The one wearing dark blue gave a small smile, and a soft hello. Roman leaned over to whisper something to Virgil.
"That's Logan, hes a huge nerd."
Virgil giggles softly, and Roman leaned away laughing. Virgil smiled brightly at the noise. He had friends! His mom would be so proud. Virgil looked at the three boys around him, the same smile on his face.
"This year is gonna be so fun"
The three boys smiled brightly (Logan not so much) back at him.
Time skip, 5th grade.
The four boys had yet to stop hanging out, 4 years with each other so far. Although they were all close friends, Virgil and Roman were basically inseparable. They went everywhere with each other. They were currently laying under a large tree in Romans back yard, staring at the bird of sky they could see through the branches.
"Hey Ro?"
Virgil suddenly asked, breaking the calm quiet that surrounded them.
"Yeah Virg?"
"Do you think we'll be friends forever?"
Roman turned his head to look at the boy next to him, only to see Virgil already looking back at him.
"Obviously silly, why wouldn't we be?"
"I don't know, just wondering..."
"I don't think I could handle not being your friend, I think I'd like explode!"
Roman emphasized, throwing his hands up to show an explosion. Virgil started laughing, and Roman couldn't help but join in. Once they had calmed down, Virgil held his pinkie out to Roman suddenly.
"Friends forever?"
Roman smiled.
"For ever and always."
Time skip to freshman year
Roman walked down the empty halls of the all to familiar school, hurrying to get to the bathroom his friend told him to meet him at. He reached the bathroom door and pushed it open, seeing Virgil sitting on the small counter twirling his thumbs and biting his lip.
"Virg, what's up?"
"Thank god you actually got my text, didn't know if you would check your phone in class."
"Well... fortunately I forgot to silence it, so it was kinda hard not to notice that you texted."
"Oh shit... did I get you in trouble?"
"No no no, my teacher just told me not to let it happen again, anyway, what did you need?"
Virgil's expression dropped.
"God... um so... this is a really weird time to tell you, but it's been eating away at my mind for to long..."
Virgil's hands were visibly shaking, and his head hung lower than usual.
"What is it?"
Roman stepped closer, putting his hand on Virgil's hoping to calm him down.
"Uh... fuck... I'm- Roman I'm gay..."
Roman went quiet for a second, and he felt Virgils hands start shaking more before they flew up to his face, wiping the tears that were quickly falling down his face.
"Aren't you gonna say something?"
Roman just started laughing. Virgil starred at him, confusion and fear filling his mind.
"Oh god, I thought you were gonna tell me something bad! Good for you Virgil, I'm glad you trusted me enough to tell me!"
Virgil let out a breath of air he hadn't realized he was holding.
"Oh thank god you're not mad, you're the only person who knows."
"Mad?! No I'm happy! I'm glad I'm not the only gay one in the group anymore!"
Virgil's head shot up.
"You're gay too?"
Roman giggled.
"I thought I made it obvious! Anyway, anyone you have your eye on?"
Virgil instantly got visibly more nervous, eyes flying to the floor and his hands to his pockets.
"...Shouldn't we get back to class?"
Roman gasped loudly.
"Hell no! Virgil you've gotta tell me! Who's the lucky guy? Do I know him?"
"Y-Yeah... pretty well.."
Romans sighed.
"Well... you just came out, I won't push you too much right now, but you're telling me eventually."
"Okay, I swear I will... thank you for not hating me Ro... it feels nice to know that someone knows weirdly enough..."
Roman smiled sadly, pulling Virgil into a tight hug. It took him a second, but Virgil eventually hugged him back and let the last few tears fall from his eyes.
"I could never hate you Virgil, remember? We pinkie promised."
Roman grabbed Virgils hand while still hugging him and laced their pinkie together.
"Friends forever."
Virgil giggled, a smile spreading onto his face.
"For ever and always."
Time skip. Out of school
Virgil and Roman eventually made it out of school, both of them deciding not to go to college, and managed to get a small apartment together. They had been dating since the day after Virgil came out, Roman quickly finding out that the crush was him.
Everything was amazing, they were happy and lived in a small neighborhood, close to Patton and Logan, who had ended up together as well. Everything seemed perfect, they obviously had their ups and downs, and had even gotten in a fight that involved Roman walking out for the night once, but as of now, everyone was amazing.
~!~
Roman and Virgil were walking to a small park that had a nice river by it to spend the morning there, the weather wasn't the best with grey clouds covering the sky, but they decided they wanted to go anyway. They were laughing and holding hands, lightly bumping each other's shoulders every now and then. Just as they reached the bridge they needed to cross to reach the park, a red car drove by and slowed down by them. Virgil was visibly uncomfortable, so Roman swapped sides with him, standing closest to the car now. The car rolled its window down, and the only thing heard was a cruel voice screaming
"Burn in hell, f**gots!"
And the sound of one single shot being fired from a gun. Roman froze, tearing his hand away from Virgil's, who was now panicking. Roman quickly fell to the concrete below them, a crimson liquid slowly oozed onto the rough surface and stained the perfect white shirt he always wore. Virgil let out a blood curdling wail, falling to his knees near his boyfriend.
"Someone help! Someone help me please!!"
He screamed, tearing off his hoodie and wrapping it around Romans bloody torso. A crowd of people surrounded them, and at least 3 had their phones out calling 9-1-1. No one dared to step closer, not knowing what Virgil would do.
"Roman! Roman baby look at me please"
Roman slowly moved his eyes to look at Virgil, but he couldn't see much of anything, with his tears slowly consuming his vision before spilling out of his eyes.
"I-it's ok v-v-virg..."
"No it's not, oh my god Roman please hold on-"
His head snapped up, looking around frantically.
"Are they in their way?!"
There was hesitant nods from the few who called. Suddenly, a familiar voice screamed from behind Virgil, follows by two pairs of running footsteps. Virgil looked up for a second to see Patton and Logan crouched down with him. Patton was sobbing, and Logan just looked terrified, obviously tearing up but holding it together for the others.
"Roman, Roman oh my god, they're on there way, just hold on please"
Roman looked at the faces of the 3 best people he's ever met, the three people who were there for him when his parents kicked him out for being gay, the three people who saw him at his lowest, and highest moments, and couldn't help but smile as blood slowly spilled out his mouth with each cough.
"Ro... r-Ro were all here fo-for you... y-you're gonna be okay!"
Patton spike frantically, wiping the blood from his mouth.
"I l-love y-you guys"
Hearing such broken words made Logan break.
"We love you too, you are going to be okay, everything is going to be okay."
Logan spoke softly, trying to hold his voice together.
Roman turned to look at Virgil again.
"I love you, I a-" he coughed loudly, wincing at the action.
"Don't try and talk, it's *hic*okay, I-I l-love you t-too"
Sirens could be heard, no less than a mile away, before they were suddenly in the parking lot. Romans vision slowly got darker around the corners.
"C-can't s-see"
"H-hey Ro just h-hold on... the ambulance is here*hic*I'm gonna ride with you... y-you're gonna be okay"
Suddenly, Roman felt himself being lifted into a board, he felt Virgil's hand that hasn't left his since he hit the ground cling even tighter onto him.
"I'm riding with him, I'm his fucking boyfriend!"
Roman turned to look at his panicky boyfriend, he couldn't help but feel bad when he saw him in this state. He moved his free hand as much as he could to his pinkie to him.
"F-f-friends for-forever"
Virgil sobbed, before a tiny smile made its way to his face.
"F-forever and always Ro"
Virgil kissed his hand, making Roman smile weakly before everything went black.
