Yao: 13

Days passed.

As promised I'm not allowed to leave the estate.

It's comforting knowing that Yao is looking out for me, even if it's expressed in this way.

The others are still curious about the other day but he hasn't told a single one what the hunter's true motives were.

I found myself wondering about Yao more.

Just what were we?

Certainly not friends but we weren't 'soulmates' either.

I realized I knew nothing about him.

Soon I found myself standing before his door.

With determination I turned the knob, letting myself in.

Yao: Not even going to announce your entrance?

Reader: I'm entering.

Yao: Tsk.

Reader: Yao, may I ask something of you?

Yao: Within reason.

Reader: I want-I want you to be more open with me.

He stopped what he was doing, fully looking at me.

Yao: Why would you want such a thing?

Reader: I'm just trying to understand you better. The last time I overheard you talking about the Foretelling, you abruptly left angrily.

Yao: So you wish to relive that anger?

Reader: Please take my request seriously!

Reader: If I'm supposed to be this, this 'Fated Gift', your soulmate--

A chuckle escaped his lips, a luscious yet deadly smile on his lips.

It was apparent to me then that he didn't believe me to be their chosen one.

What was this all for then?

I realized that even I didn't believe that I was special.

Reader: I wanted to be though.

He turned, quizzical.

Yao: What?

Reader: Despite not knowing all the details, I thought I wanted to become the Fated Gift.

Reader: I thought as your soulmate I'd finally learn who you really are. What my Fate might actually be.

He was silent.

This is it then.

I've done all I can do.

If he won't tell me what I need to know, I'll never become their Gift.

I'll be tossed out, if not killed on the spot.

A shiver raced down my spine, shuddering.

No.

Yao wouldn't let that happen.

Right?

Yao: Please sit.

I could feel defeated tears wanting to burn their way forward yet complied.

Yao: You and I...we've actually met before.

Reader: ...what?

Yao: I knew you, as a child. Knew all of the men, too.

How could that be?

Reader: I-I don't...

Yao: As the eldest I was somewhat of the boys' guardian.

Yao: However, just as I knew you, I knew your father, too.

I stiffened.

Reader: You, you knew father?

That would explain why he had a picture of him, stashed away.

Yao: As you know, I have different 'qualities' than the other vampires. Some call them magical abilities.

Yao: Per your father's request, I erased the boy's memories of you.

What?

Yao: Alfred's too, but it seems he was strong enough to fight it off, heh.

He looked me straight in the eyes, brown and cold.

Yao: I was requested to erase your memories, too. Though...in the end I couldn't.

Reader: Why, why would you do such a thing to them?! And why...why wouldn't you do it to me?

Yao: I couldn't. I-...It was purely for selfish reasons.

Yao: I didn't want you to forget me...But it seems you did, without me having to do anything...

Reader: Yao...

I clenched my fists on my lap, heart swirling with a million emotions.

Betrayal.

Hatred.

Fear.

Sadness.

Reader: If you erased my memories, then I'd have forgotten about...

I quickly changed my words.

Reader: About you.

He let out a defeated, shaky sigh.

Yao: Like I said, _, it was truly and utterly selfish of me.

Reader: Would you?

Yao: What?

Reader: If you could erase my memories right now, good with bad, would you?

Yao:...Despite having this power, I regret ever using it.
