After the concert, I walked off stage sweaty, out of breath and exhausted. I had a pounding headache from playing that intensely, and the roar of the crowd was taking its toll on me. I walked backstage and was greeted by more friendly cheers.
"Lilly!! You were great!!" Stone said, suddenly hugging me.
I laughed and squeezed him back gently. "Thank you Stone."
He nodded his head, and then walked back over to the couch.
"You really did a great job!" Eddie said smiling.
"Yeah, incredible really babe!" Mike said.
I could feel my face was bright red. "Thank you so much, really. It means the world."
I felt the familiar touch of Anthony as he wrapped his arm around me. "Too bad we couldn't kick John out of the band and put you in, huh baby?"
"Hey!" John shouted.
I couldn't help but laugh at the thought of me even being in a band. I mean sure in high school I was the drummer of one called Nightshade. But, a really popular one? Not so much. I'm not even that good.
I was about to sit down on the couch when my body froze up as the sound of a voice calling my name.
"Lilly? Oh my God, Lilly!"
It couldn't be him.... since when does he live in New York?! No way, it couldn't be... no way...
I spun around on my heel to face the tall, somewhat muscular figure coming towards me. I knew I was right. There's wasn't any way in any world I would forget a voice that made me swoon so much.
"Connor?!"
My heart couldn't have beat any faster.
"Yeah!!"
Connor hugged me, picked me up and spun me around in two fast circles, before setting me down and gazing into my eyes.
His short blond hair and blue eyes paralyzed me like they did when I was in high school. That playful quirky smile I'd loved so much returned along with the comfortable tightness of his hugs.
I felt everyone watching us, and cleared my throat awkwardly as I pulled away from Connor.
He too felt the heat of everyone's eyes and shuffled his feet.
"So.. what are you doing here?" The excitement in his voice was almost too much to not notice.
"I... uh, I'm with the band."
"With? You a roadie?"
I shook my head, but before I could speak, Flea's stand-offish tone echoed past me.
"No. She's with him."
I felt Anthony's anger from here. Not a good feeling, if you're wondering.
Connor and I talked for a few more minutes, and I couldn't help but giggle and blush at his every word.
"Well, uh, Lilly... do you wanna catch up for a few minutes? I haven't seen you in so long. I kinda miss you."
Without really thinking, my heart fluttered. "Sure!"
Connor smiled, "Great! Coffee?"
"Sounds good." I turned around to say goodbye to the rest of the gang, and then headed out.
I wasn't worried about whether or not Anthony was upset anymore, I was focused on Connor.
I followed him outside, and across the street to the small cafe where we sat down outside with our drinks.
"So, how you been Kinks?" He asked.
"Good. Really good, actually. If you don't mind me asking, how'd you find me?"
Connor laughed. Oh God, that laugh... "I actually came out here to see the Pumpkins, and then when you came on stage..."
I nodded, "Yeah. Remind you of the old times?"
He pursed his lips, and I couldn't help but taste misery in my mouth. "A lot."
There was a few minutes of silence.
"I really miss you, Lilly."
"You do..?"
"Yeah... would you ever consider trying again? I mean, I know it's been so long, and it's really blunt of me to ask, but you have to admit, we had it good."
"We did.. but I also remember what you did to me. I'm also involved with someone else, Connor. Someone I really have major feelings for."
He frowned slightly, and grabbed my hand gently across the table.
"Not even for pop rocks and soda?"
Oh, for fuck's sake. "You remember that?"
"How could I forget? I nearly shit myself!"
We both laughed, remembering just how fun high school could be.
"You know Lilly, you look even more beautiful than you did back then. If that's even possible."
I shook my head, "Nonsense."
"No, really. You're beautiful."
I blushed, "Thanks Connor."
Hours passed of Connor and I talking back and forth when I realized just how long we'd been there.
"Shit! Connor, I have to get back now..."
He nodded and stood up from his chair.
"Yeah, it's cool. I'll give you ride home?"
I said yes meekly and then followed him to his small truck.
The ride back to the hotel was quiet. I spent all of it recapping memories of Connor and I's relationship in my head.
He and I met in high school at Battle of the Bands night. I was drumming for Nightshade at the time and Connor was the singer for Blacksmith.
My band totally crushed his and the rest, taking home the victory. Due to the loss, he made me take him out for ice cream. Our relationship grew from there. Nightshade broke up months later, and so did Blacksmith.
At that point Connor and I were dating. He formed a new band with me, and a few other guys. We were actually doing really well until January of my Senior year.
I showed up to practice one day, to see someone else behind the drum set. When Connor saw me, he took me outside, explained that we were breaking up and my position had been filled in the band.
Yeah, so definitely not a good string of memories.
Connor walked me up to my hotel room, and kissed my cheek.
"Bye Lilly, it was nice seeing you again."
"Yeah, you too."
With that, he stuffed his hands in his pockets and shuffled down the hall with his shoulders sulked low.
I unlocked the door, and slipped inside the room.
Anthony was sitting on the edge of the bed. The dark clouds floating around him were almost big enough to suffocate all the air.
"I'm back.."
"Oh? Sorry, I didn't even notice you were gone."
Ouch.
"What's that supposed to mean?"
Keep calm, Lilly. Calm.
Anthony's body jumped up from the and faced me quicker than I could blink.
"You tell me. You wanna explain to me who the fuck that guy was? And you were fucking giddy as shit over him?"
"He's an old boyfriend. I wasn't giddy."
Anthony laughed sarcastically, "Yeah, and I was fucking born yesterday. When have you been this fucking stupid Lilly?"
My eyes started swelling with tears. "What's your fucking problem?!" I was shouting, my lungs trying to fill the room.
"You're my fucking problem! Just get the fuck out! Go fuck Connor or something!"
I looked at Anthony one last time, as his eyes glowed like hot coals, and venom dripped from his tongue.
Tears fell from my eyes in streams, and I sprinted out of the room. I collapsed against the back of the elevator and sunk to the floor, trying to figure out what was happening.
All I knew was that the pain in my chest was hurting more than it'd ever hurt before.
The doors opened finally, and I rushed down the hall to John's room.
I knocked, the tears washing off all my makeup.
Eventually, John opened the door, dressed in pajama pants and sleepy posture.
"Lilly? W-What's the matter?"
Without saying anything, I fell into John and sobbed.
