Meet Again

One Wednesday morning 2 weeks after school started, Rory was dropping Grace and Sammy off at school. After bringing Sammy to his classroom, Rory walked Grace to the elementary school building, and from there she headed to the hospital to meet Logan and Nicky.
Nicky was having a few tests done that day do hopefully find out that the cancer was gone.

When she got there, Logan was sitting in the waiting room. "Hey" he said. "They took him for the scan a little while ago. He should be out soon"

"Ok" Rory said and sat down next to him.

They sat there for a little while before someone told them that Nicky was done and back in his room.

"While I was waiting I got to watch the Lego movie" Nicky said. "And they put on music for me when I was in the machine"

"That's good" Rory said.

They spent a few hours at the hospital, waiting for the results. Around noon Dr Johnson came into the room and started examining Nicky. "Nicky, do you feel good right now?" He asked.

"Yeah" Nicky said. "I only feel sick when I get the medicine". It had been 2 weeks since he had a chemo treatment so he was feeling mostly normal. He'd also started eating a little more which was good.

"Good" the doctor said. "Does your chest ever hurt? Maybe when you cough, or laugh really hard?"

Nicky shook his head.

"What's going on?" Logan asked.

"Do you guys want to step out into the hall for a moment?" Dr Johnson asked. Rory and Logan followed him outside but they stayed where they could still see Nicky. "So Nicky's PET scan shows that there are still cancer cells in his brain and unfortunately it also shows a mass in his chest"

"What does that mean?" Rory asked

"It could be nothing, but I'd like to do a biopsy to check" Dr Johnson said. "We could do it tonight and he'd likely be able to go home on Saturday, possibly Sunday, depending on how he recovers"

"Ok" Logan said.

"Now the mass in his lungs doesn't seem to be causing any issues and removing it is likely to cause some damage to the healthy lung tissue, so if it's benign I'd recommend we leave it alone. Of course if it becomes an issue later on, we'll revisit the idea of removing it" Dr Johnson said. "If it is cancer, we'll determine what kind of cancer it is before coming up with a treatment plan"

On Friday morning, Rory was in her house with Lorelai. Logan was at the hospital with Nicky and Grace and Sammy were at school.

"I just don't understand" Lorelai said as she handed Rory a pair of Nicky's socks.

"What's there to understand?" Rory asked

"He has 2 different kinds of cancer?"

"Not exactly. It's the same cancer and they think it probably started in his chest and spread to his brain which is a thought that terrifies me" Rory said.

"If it started in his chest then why did they only find it in his brain?"

"They only found it because he collapsed and they scanned his brain. There was no reason to scan his chest until the other day when they did a full body PET scan to confirm that the cancer was completely gone. So much for that"

"So what now?

"His doctors are trying to come up with the best plan to treat it, but whatever they decide to do is probably gonna be really hard on Nicky" she sighed. "We're bringing Shadow with us, by the way"
