He felt so much guilt after Chihiro and Mondo died because he had direct influence in that. Makoto couldn't look Ishimaru in the eyes for awhile and couldn't pass by either of their rooms without feeling shaky. As more deaths happened, it really weighed on him and he could barely see any reminder of them without nearly breaking down into tears.
