Every year for birthdays or anniversaries , Kokichi draws Shuichi a random facial feature of his, whether it be a chunk of hair or an eyebrow, and gives it to him. At first, it came off as a funny joke, so Shuichi kept the drawings. But one after another, it became more and more clear that these were pieces of a puzzle. Every year Kokichi gives Shuichi a new piece, and excitedly watches as he adds it onto the rest.
Shuichi never finished it. He died before he could and Kokichi didn't have the heart to connect the final pieces of the puzzle, since it was a drawing of Shuichi's face and he couldn't bring himself to draw him without him there.
