Love Grows (Hearts behind Walls)

Silently, Wangji started humming, strumming. He could feel a presence behind the wall, but he paid it no mind as he started, his fingers brushing against the familiar strings of the guitar. A face flew to his mind as he closed his eyes. Ebony hair, shimmering crimson-grey eyes, that reminded him of freshly-cut rubies. They set alight something in his heart, and he couldn't help but remember the way he grinned, leaning forward to help the old lady as she crossed the road, talking cheerfully to her. Wei Ying, he thought, the name like a whispered prayer on his lips. Like a decadent flower, he couldn't wait to savour but he was terrified of trying. In his mind's eye, the cheerful boy was handing the only lady money, despite the tattered, worn state of his own clothes, before cheerfully waving her off. His heart skipped a beat thinking of him, and he couldn't help it when the words floated out.

"He ain't got no money, his clothes are kinda funny, his hair is kinda wild and free," he paused for a moment, imagining his hands running through those silky locks, pulling him close even as the back of his mind screamed "Inappropriate!" The voice sounded suspiciously like his uncle's though Wangji imagined he could hear his brother chuckling at that. He ignored the way his ears turned red, as the next words tumbled out.

"Oh, but Love grows where my Rosemary goes,"

"And nobody knows like me," knows the way he grins, the left corner of his lips quirking up before the right side of his mouth does, the way his eyes hold an entire galaxy in them, glittering with stars that seemed to illuminate Lan Zhan's heart, the shine in his eyes like the North Star that pointed Lan Zhan home.

"he talks kinda lazy,

And people say he's crazy

And his life's a mystery,"

Behind the wall, Wei Ying felt his heart swell, swell, and swell. The lyrics sent something down his heart like he was waiting for it to spin, before bursting into flames. Gilt eyes glittered before him, and he couldn't help but grin. If only he was the one behind the door. The memory of warm hands brushing against his didn't elude him, and he savoured the kiss of warm skin against his, no matter how minute it was.. the way golden eyes slid past his skin, making him feel so alive. Without knowing why, he sang back.

"Oh, but Love grows where my Rosemary goes, and nobody knows like me," He shook his head at that, lips curling inside themselves, just like his heart did, the blossoms of love unfurling their leaves, their roots stretching over the bursting canvas of his heart, painted in brilliant red and blue.

"There's something about his hand holding mine. It's a feeling that's fine,"

"And I just gotta say,

He's really got a magical spell, and it's working so well that I can't get away," No matter how much Wei Ying tried to pull away, it was futile. Everything seemed to bring him back to Sapphire, the same way it was when he first met him. Gilt eyes behind a sapphire mask, dancing in keen hope. The moment he set eyes upon him, he knew. Love was like a flower, its roots taking hold of his heart as it curled around the narrow confines of his windpipe.

Sighing softly, he continued, "I'm a lucky fella, and I've just got to tell him that I love him endlessly."

" Because Love grows where my Rosemary goes, and nobody knows like me,"

Wangji melted into the whimsical notes, loving the soft notes of the other's voice. Despite having only heard him a few times, Wangji couldn't help but feel drawn to him, familiarity setting their wings on the back of his mind, brushing against his back, sending shivers up his spine. For a moment, it was as if he was connected to the figure behind the wall, the same way he was drawn to Wei Ying. So close, yet so far. But Lan Zhan knew there was nothing in the world he'd change his love for. He echoed the words again, playing with them as if they were a brush in his fingers, floating and light-headed.

"There's something about his hand holding mine, it's a feeling that's fine," It was so much more than that something that Wangji couldn't put into words. Every brush of skin felt like a massive butterfly hurtling against his heart, trying to break it open, despite the walls he'd put up so long ago. His love for his rosemary was obstinate, almost as much as his Rosemary was stubborn.

"And I just gotta say, he's really got a magical spell," if the broken chains on his heart were anything to go by, "And it's working so well, that I can't get away," Not that he wanted to in the first place when love bound him in place. His love for Wei Ying seemed to run deeper each day, no matter how long they'd been apart. Distance makes the heart grow fonder, he remembered, but the proximity made his love grow wild.

"I'm a lucky fella, and I've just got to tell him,"

"That I love him endlessly," I can't tell where my love for you began, but I don't think it'll ever end, either. I wish I had the courage to tell you, Wei Ying. His fingers stretched out painstakingly, in hopes of finding another. He missed the feel of callused and ink-stained fingers through his, the warmth of another next to him.

Softly, another voice joined Wangji's voice. It was like a symphony to his ears, and he loved the flute-like notes of the other, the breathy pauses, which reminded him so strongly of his Rosemary.

"Because Love grows where my Rosemary goes, and nobody knows like me."

"It keeps growing every place he's been, and nobody knows like me." every inch of skin he's touched, every word that has entered my ears, finding their way to my heart,

"If you've met him, you'll never forget him," not in this lifetime, not in the next.

"And nobody knows like me,"

"La la la-", Wei Ying hummed, before the two continued in unison,

"Believe it when you've seen it, nobody knows like me."

Before long, both of their voices trailed off in the dark. Unknowingly, their hands stretched back to the wall that separated them, almost as if they'd hoped to reach through the wall to grasp the other. They both sat in silence for a while, listening to their heartbeat thrumming against their rib cages, like a butterfly trapped in a gilt prison, the image of another held lovingly in the concaves of their hearts.

"That was...fun," Wei Wuxian managed to exhale, "Let's do it again next time?"

"Mm," came the nonchalant response, "Let's do it again."

For some reason, both of them found it hard to pull away that night, their hearts beating as one, even across their separate rooms. This wouldn't be the end...or would it?
