chapter 48
———

Emma's POV
I put my laptop into my brown desk drawer, locking it before grabbing my book bag.

Vibrate!

I pulled out my phone to see that Sofia texted me.

•••••
I'm outside.

"Good, right on schedule." I shoved my phone into my bag before going to open my room door.

As it opened, I almost jumped out of my skin when a tall figure stood in front of me. I put my hand over my heart and let out a breathy sigh.

"Mother, I, uh...didn't know you were home today" I said.

"Well, I do have some paperwork to do here so I called off last minute" Mom said, sighed. "Anyways, where are you going?"

"Oh, uh...I had signed up for—"

"Oh, gimme a break, Emma" Mom cut me off. "Have you suddenly grown dumb? Since when do you, as a 'Diddlebee' sign up to help the specials in need?"

"M-Mother, that isn't exactly what I—"

"Hahaha! I'm just teasing. You know I love you, dear" Mom giggled.

I nervously chuckled. "Right. But honestly, I really have to go now, Mother."

"...Okay" Mom said. "Be back before the street lamps turn on."

I nodded while Mom silently walked into her room. I let out a sigh of relief as I frowned, walking down the stairs and soon out the house.

I opened the front passenger seat door, getting in. "Sorry for the delay. I was talking with my Mom."

"It's okay" Sofia reassured. "Mrs. Fay sometimes does that to me."

"Mrs. who?" I asked.

"I'll tell you some other time" Sofia whispered.

The car soon began to drive away from my house from the right side of the street.

"Would you mind if I drive passed Xena's house for a moment?" Sofia asked.

"Um....sure, but...why are you doing that, exactly?" I asked.

"It's just one of the things I do now" Sofia shrugged. "Drive past my friends' houses to see if they're home."

Since when did that matter?

I raised an eyebrow, leaning slightly forward to look at Sofia's face. For the first time, I saw a slight frown on Sofia's face as her eyes had less light in it than usual.

Oh, I get it. Secrets.

"Go ahead" I sighed.

Sofia made a left 'U' turn and we were soon driving straight down the street.

"Wow, I forgot our houses were in front of each other" I mumbled. "No wonder we meet up so easily."

Sofia slowly drove up towards Xena's house. The sound of yelling that sounded like it was coming from two people made me grimace.

"...Oh, there she is." Sofia drove down the street and I looked to see blue hair and black clothes walking down the street.

"Hey Xena, where're you going?" Sofia asked.

"To Sin's" Xena answered.

"Oh, I could drop you off if you want" Sofia offered. "I already need to drop Emma off anyways."
