Ch21: Don't be afraid to get wet

For the first time, in a long time, I could say I was bored.

It wasn't because I had nothing to do, because I had a backpack full of homework and a mountainous pile of dirty dishes waiting for me. I was just too lazy and too bored to lift a finger. But I felt as if lying around increased my boredom, and I was tired of being bored, so I did what I should've done an hour ago.

I got up and walked out the house to find someone who could entertain me. Because if was feeling completely non-productive, then I'll use the little amount of energy I had left to hang out with someone... exciting.

Now my first thought was, if I wanted someone who is exciting, jubilant, crazy, and even psycho, I should call Sydney. Which is fine and dandy, but maybe that's a little too much excitement for now. But if I wanted to be lectured on how I should be doing my homework I could call up Jess.

Or maybe even my parents.

If I called them both maybe everything would balance out. (By both I mean Jess and Sydney and not my mom and dad.)

I could feel my feet slow to a stop, and also my thinking process. I was basically at a fork in the road. One direction led to Sydney and Jess and the other option was the park which I've grown  accustomed too.

But I hadn't realized there was a third option.

I gazed upon the house down the street that wasn't too far from mine. It was strange this person's name hadn't surfaced in my mind. They were fun, yet not too enthusiastic for my brain right now. And quite frankly, I hadn't seen them in a while.

Making a decision, I headed for the red bricked house with the dark shingled roof. I didn't think twice about ringing the door bell, but I did cross my fingers behind my back in hopes that someone was home.

I didn't have to wait long when the door drifted open revealing the inside of the house.... but no person.

I was confused and thought that the door had magically opened all by itself, but then a small voice that clearly belonged to a little girl caused everything to make more sense.

"Oh, it's you."

I couldn't help but think the same thing as my eyes landed on the girl standing in the doorway.

Alice was short, but her attitude made up for her young age and height. But I think I'm probably the only one Lake's sister isn't fond of. Whether she has an issue with nerdy looking girls, (I hadn't bothered to change after school, but my outfit wasn't even that bad today) Or she flat out didn't like me or I emitted some type of dangerous vibe. Which I really don't. I think.

This is a kid! I thought.

But I felt like the small one as I asked softly, like the air was made of glass, if Lake was home.

"Yep."

I blinked, waiting if she had more to say. And she did.

"Well, I answered your question. You're free to go." She shooed me in the direction I should leave in with her dainty hand.

I looked around myself making sure this pre-schooler was addressing me.

Letting out a nervous laugh I said, "Well, I was kind of hoping if your brother could come outside."

"Why?" she questioned immediately.

What do you mean why!? Just go get your dang brother!

But of course yelling at a five year old, no matter how frustrating they may be, is not smiled upon.

I bent down to Alice's level and had a sort of girl-to-girl talk.
