“Hey Jim, I see that your back with a little present,” Brent remarked. The dude held a smirk on his face as he glanced at me. Brent was referring to MY money that this Jim guy stole.

I stared at the faces of the crowd that makes everyone’s lives miserable. I didn't know anything about the girls sitting at the table, but it wasn't like they were jumping up to my rescue. Of course not every popular person is mean or conceited, but the ones sitting at this table were coming off as jerks. They might have perfect white teeth, amazingly styled hair, and nice features, but their personalities were in no way perfect.

“Are you scared Tammie? Oh wait; it’s not Tammie, its nerd.” Brent jeered.

I straightened my posture and glared at him. “I’m not scared of you.” That was all true. I can’t let him get to me.

The guy who stole my money took a menacing step forward. “If I were you, I would beg mommy for some extra allowance.”

I stood my ground and threatened, “If I were you, I would give me my money back.”

The boy narrowed his brown eyes at me. His angular features were scrunched up in concentration. One of us had to cave in and it wasn’t going to be me. The whole table sat in silence. It was like a court room waiting for the verdict.

A full minute passed until Jim rolled his eyes.”Whatever. You’re so sensitive. You can’t even take a joke.” I grabbed onto the out stretched paper, but he didn’t let go.

“It’s not a joke. It’s bullying. It’s not cool, it’s not funny at all, and you should stop it.” My words hung in the air as I yanked the twenty out of the Jim's hand.

I took one last look at everyone's shocked faces. Oh come on, just because I'm a nerd, doesn't mean I'm not capable of standing up for myself!

I walked away with my head held high. I’ve only been here for half a day, and I’m already worked up.   Whispers erupted from the surrounding tables as I ventured back to the lunch line. I simply ignored them. I stood there tapping my foot as I waited for the line to move.

A small voice interrupted my thoughts. "Hey, Tammie, are you alright?" I turned around to see Sydney standing there with a concerned look on her face.

I blew out a sigh and said, "Yeah, I'm fine."

"Okay, I'll be at that table waiting for you and your friend." She pointed at a red circular table that could seat at least four.

I nodded my head in response and waited to get my food. Her words repeated in my head. It was then I realized that I forgot about Jess! My mind was so focused on how stupid the populars were that I failed to remember him! Guiltiness seeped into my mind.

Praying that the lunch line moved quickly, I finally reached the lunch lady and asked for a pizza and water. I wasn't that hungry and I needed to find Jess. I paid for my lunch and jogged to Sydney's table.

"Hey, I'll be right back. I need to find my friend."

I already started walking away as I heard Sydney mumble a 'sure.'

My eyes searched for a certain tall skinny boy. I checked every table, but I didn't see him anywhere. He should be here by now since lunch started ten minutes ago. I put a finger on my lips as I tried to think of where Jess might be.

BINGO! He must be at the library.

I ran to the library hoping that I was right. This lunch was important. In order to break Jess out his shell, he needed to meet outgoing people. Sydney definitely fit that description (and me...), so I thought this would be a great opportunity.
