Jess's POV
BRINNNGGGGGG
My eyes, hesitant to open from the deep sleep, slowly narrowed in on the rectangular alarm clock resting on my bedside table. I brought my arm from underneath the covers, and slammed the button to silence the annoying ring. Next, out of habit, I patted the table for my glasses, which would usually be right there. I had forgotten I made the switch to contacts, and my glasses were abandoned in the case that I barely used. I made a 'humph' sound, and clambered from bed and headed for the bathroom. Every tiny thing that use to be part of my morning routine, like not bothering to comb my hair, or wearing mis-matching socks, was a now big no no. And to tell you the truth, I kind of missed it.
My reflection in the mirror seemed to resemble a situation where you see a familiar face, but you can't quite put your finger on who they are. My brown hair that use to lack shine wasn't floppy, or looking like a train wreck, it was surprisingly nice and soft. I had thanked the stylist for doing such a nice job, but the new haircut was something I had to get use to. There were probably more things that were noticeably different, but I'm not the sharpest in the fashion world, so I didn't pay attention to them.
I brushed my brace free teeth quickly and put in my contacts, then went to my closet to pull on some clothes. I browsed through the new and somewhat unfamiliar clothing, and decided on a pair of black jeans, a long-sleeved plaid shirt, and a white shirt to go underneath. I didn't bother with a shirt last night, so I wiggled on the white tee, then the blue plaid shirt unbuttoned on top. I slipped on a random pair of shoes and grabbed my back pack before heading downstairs.
I made a detour to the kitchen to say good-bye to my mom before I left. I wasn't in the mood to get something to eat, but I wanted to take my time to say a few words to my mother.
Like always, my mom was sitting at the kitchen table sipping coffee comfortably while wearing her feminine pink robe.
"I'm leaving." I said, causing her attention to transition from the morning paper to me.
"Okay, hun, but aren't you going to eat breakfast?" She asked concerned.
I shook my head. "Naw, I have to get going."
After that I swiftly gave her a kiss on the cheek and drove to school.
My car was nothing comparable to expensive or fancy. It was my mom's old, worn down chevy she use to drive around before earning enough money to get a more reliable vehicle. I didn't drive to school that often, not because I was ashamed of my car, but because there would be a huge chance my old girl would break down.
Once I arrived at school, I found a space in the parking lot and stationed there. I climbed out and carefully shut the driver side door. I patted the hood as if saying 'see you later' then walked to the front entrance where I saw a pair of familiar figures. I was a decent distance way, but I could already hear the excited voice travelling closer to me as if the person was sprinting my way. Unsurprisingly, it was a hyperactive redhead.
"Jess!" Sydney hollered as she bounded my way. As usual a big smile was on her face. For some reason Sydney smiling or laughing could always brighten my day, no matter how pestering she can be.
"Ready for round two at lunch?" She questioned with a jubilant expression. Just then Tammie approached us with a mischievous glint in her eyes. The staring wasn't exactly comforting. It looked like she was trying to analyze something.
"Uhm.. yeah." I answered distractedly as I darted my eyes to Tammie who was now inspecting her nails. Weird.
"Well, you're looking good again today." Sydney said with a slight hesitation. As I looked at Sydney I could see a faint trace of pink on her cheeks. I almost scrunched my eyebrows in confusion because I've never seen Sydney blush.
