My expression resembled boredom, my posture looked relaxed and normal, but my mind was anything but calm.
Jim? Kat and Jim? Hallie and Jim? They fought over.... Jim?
My eyes constantly darted from Kat, to Hallie and Nadine. I couldn't quite grasp all the information that I had only acquired minutes ago. One thing was certain though. I really needed to get to Sydney and Jess as soon as school let out. Which would be in precisely forty-five minutes. A very agonizing forty-five minutes I would have to endure.
I disregarded the idea of completing my homework to waste time, I didn't have a book with me to read, and I doubted any of the words would register in my excited brain anyway. All I could do was sit there and wonder: What exactly did I get myself into?
"Nadine, I know someone overheard us in the bathroom!"
The person talking was Hallie. Though she was talking in a low whisper, I could hear every word said thankfully because the people around me weren't talking, and because I was only two desks away.
Ignoring Hallie, Nadine instead briefed threateningly, "Once I find out who the girl was, I swear I'll make sure next time she'll fall off a cliff!"
I gulped. I took Nadine's threat into a high possibility that she in fact, in all senses was serious. I wouldn't pass her to light the person on fire before menacingly laughing in their face before they fell to their death. Too graphic maybe?
"How are you sure it was a girl?" Hallie questioned.
A short pause of mocking silence lingered in the air before Nadine answered back. "You've got to be kidding me, Hal. Why would a boy go into the girl's restroom. That's like a guy avoiding the feminine products aisle!"
"Oh."
I couldn't help but let out a small snicker and the shaking of my shoulders that came with it. I quickly covered my mouth and sat still in case Nadine noticed me. But it was too late.
"What are you laughing at,Tammie?" Nadine asked in a snobbish tone.
I thought about ignoring her, but I didn't want to appear weak. Although, I did have the upper-hand of knowing their secret, it wasn't time to take advantage of them not knowing... yet.
With a smirk on my lips I turned around in my seat to face her. "Oh, nothing. Just how stupid you sound when you're speaking," I said without a purpose of backing down.
Nadine glared and Hallie sat there avoiding the need to say something.
Nadine probably would have said something nasty in return if not for the teacher interrupting us and calling my name.
"Tammie, where's the permission note I gave you to leave class?"
I froze. I locked eyes with Nadine which I regretted, because the look in her eyes resembled a light bulb clicking off in her head.
I mentally swore as I slowly turned around and replied with a even voice, "I threw it away."
That was a lie. The paper was still tucked inside my pant's pocket. I didn't want to get up to really throw it away. I couldn't because if I did, I know my legs would be shaking.
Ms. Guggenheimer nodded her head and went back to whatever she was previously doing.
I wasn't ready to admit I was afraid that Nadine thought it was me who eavesdropped on her, but I was now very cautious of what I would say so she wouldn't suspect me further.
"You left class, Tammie?" Nadine pressed.
Being honest I said, "Yes."
I didn't face her at all as she continued interrogating me.
