Ch20: I don't want to be thrown off a cliff

Start from the beginning

"Did you have to use the bathroom?" The question was asked sickeningly sweet.

"No."

Like a bomb about to explode, I waited for the protests, yelling, the throwing off the cliff part, the-

"Okay." Nadine said which surprised me. "I believe you... for now."

And I hoped she would leave me alone.... at least for now.

I had to say the sound of a bell ringing was like a choir of singing angels to my ears. I was one of the first people to exit class and one of the few that were already outside. (I skipped going to my locker.)

People were rushing to get home, but I was in a hurry for entirely different reasons. Those reasons were Jess and Sydney, who were walking towards my direction, but han't noticed me yet.

"Guys! Come here!" I called hoping to grab their attention.

Sydney noticed me and came over with Jess at her heels.

"What's up?" Jess asked.

"Oh, you've got to hear this! " I said with anticipation.

Sydney and Jess stared at me, waiting for me to explain. I wanted to spill everything on the spot, but I knew this wasn't the place to do so. I looked around and saw there were too many ears that could overhear our conversation, so I ushered them to the parking lot where it was more secluded.

"Geez, what's so important that we have to come all the way over here for?" Sydney asked.

Sydney was just about to find out. I took a deep breath and recited my story from the beginning. I even mentioned Ms. Guggenhemier forcing me to take a note just so I could use the toilet. (Sydney and Jess totally agreed with me that that was absurd.)

I informed them on every little detail I could remember. My story was coming to a close once I reached the part about Nadine asking all those questions, making statements, and assuming. And everything came to an end when I reached the present time.

"Wow." Jess breathed.

"Really wow." Sydney copied.

"I know." I nodded my head. "So what do ya'll think?"

"Well," Sydney had a thoughtful look on her face. "It makes sense and all. Everyone is at Nadine's party. Hallie walks in on Kat and Jim making out. Hallie feels hurt that her best friend would betray her by kissing the guy she really liked. I'd be distraught and heart broken too."

Sydney then looked at me and added, "Take notes, Tam. We don't want to end up like them."

I chuckled at her joke. "Yeah, but what do we do with this information? How do we utilize it?"

It was a question we were all pondering over. Sure we've been following a plan and making sure we do everything right, but at this point everthing's like a test that's 95% done. The five percent not finished are the questions you've left blank because you can't figure out what to do. You know the basics, but sometimes things are too in depth that you just have to wing it.

"Blackmail? Humiliation? We forget everything that's happened?" Sydney suggested.

Jess sent Sydney a look. "Are those the best options you can come up with?"

"Fine, Jess. How about we just do what we thought of originally? We straighten them out."

As if 'straighten them out' was all that needed to be said.

"Elaborate." I urged.

"Well, it's technically blackmail. Because I'm pretty sure Nadine and Hallie don't want the entire school to know their seemingly perfect life isn't so perfect. So if we come out with our knowledge and threaten to tell the whole school they'll stop bothering everyone. Do you get what I'm saying?"

I got what Sydney was saying alright. But would everything work? If we fought with knives would Nadine bring out a gun? I'm pretty sure gun beats knives.

"What about Jim?" Jess asked.

"What about him?" Sydney said as if Jim wasn't an important factor.

"Shouldn't we find out more about what happened that night? Shouldn't we be confronting the guy who was involved with it all?"

"Jess has a point," I admitted.

Sydney started staring off in the distance with her hands stuffed into her pockets. I noticed how she was wearing a hoodie. Resembling how the air was slightly chilly and suitable for a jacket. We were already in September and I knew soon enough October would spring up on us. I didn't realize a month had passed.

"Well, it looks like Jess's job with hanging out with the populars isn't done."

That night before going to bed, in my red journal I wrote down a quote that summed up all my thoughts.

“Sometimes the questions are complicated and the answers are simple.”

― Dr. Seuss

I shut my notebook close, my eyes following suit.
