Ch16: Weird red heads, blondes, and brunettes

I sighed. It seems like Sydney didn't have any thoughts of wisdom to preach, so I got up without a word and proceeded to begin my lunch with ya'll know who. Yesterday Nadine seemed okay with me eating lunch with them for the rest of the week.

With my long strides, I was standing before the populars table in no time.

"Hey, man." Jim greeted. Jim saying something pleasant never fails to appall me.

In response, I gave him a head nod thing that 'cool' people do. Well apparently in Sydney's mental addition of 'What Cool People Do and Say' my gesture was appropriate.

I took my seat next to Brent who's always been apprehensive of me, nicely dressed or not.

I unfolded the tinfoil wrap from my sandwich and immediately took a big bite. School food can sometimes be unappetizing, but I was starving since I didn’t eat breakfast.

“Babe, can you open my water for me?” Nadine fluttered her eyelashes at Brent and pouted her lips. I suppose she thought she looked cute, but to me she looked like a weird fish.

“Okay, give it here.” Brent said gruffly.

I wasn’t one to snicker at anything, but I almost did when I saw Nadine’s facial expression. Her mouth parted a little from shock, but her hand robotically transferred the water bottle to Brent’s awaiting palms.

Brent twisted the cap with ease and placed the bottle in front of his troubled girlfriend. Nadine is in fact dating Brent Richards, but it’s been a while since I’ve seen them actually act like a couple. Sure his arm is always encircled around her waist, she even wears his football jersey to his games, but I’ve never seen them content with the relationship or really show PDA. The last one I actually don’t mind, because I’m not that fond of witnessing couples interacting affectionately.

As you can guess, I’m not use to the prospect of being intimate with a girl. I haven’t even had a proper girlfriend yet. You can call me a loser, but it’s not that bad. Yes, it’s heartbreaking when the girl you like might not even know your own name, but over time I’ve moved on. But that was actually years ago. I don’t really connect with my feelings anymore, but hopefully someday someone special will bring out the sappy in me.

I took a sip from my soda to clear my head of my weird thoughts. Sometimes when a commercial break is on, I read some of my mom’s magazines to waste time. The tips and do’s and dont’s of relationships, and cheesy love stories, are forever embellished in my brain.

“Did you watch last night’s game, man?” I looked up to see Jim looking at me.

I froze slightly. I could feel the nerves building up because I had no clue what game Jim was talking about. Which sport could it be? Basketball, football, baseball… is foosball considered to be a sport??

“Yeah, dude, it was really, uhm, intense.” I replied safely. I guess all games reach a peak of intensity. I hope. As you can tell I don’t tune into ESPN that often.

I was relieved when Jim found what I said to be precise enough. “I swear San Diego was going to have an upset.”

I tried to make my face look as disappointed as his. “Same here.”

For the rest of lunch I was conversing with Jim about sports, best colleges to get a sport scholarship for, and of course what girls we found hot. I said the most common name in my head which was Megan Fox. I can’t even remember what she looks like for crying out loud, but I played my role and said anything I thought was convincing.

Not once did directly I look over to Tammie and Sydney’s table, because I was afraid they would distract me from my task at hand. Sometimes when I risked a quick glance, I saw Sydney dropping napkin onto the floor and making absurd motions with her hands. I assumed she was trying to get Tammie to agree with her on something. Whatever it was, Tammie would shake her head ‘no’ and bang her head repetitively against the table.

Lunch eventually ambled to an end, meaning another unsuccessful day without learning anything worth sharing about the populars. All I learned is they’re basically normal teenagers. They have problems, just like the whole world. But everyone is different, so ultimately Nadine’s problems relate to if a new line of purses will be out in time for the fall season.

As I got up to throw away my trash, I could hear Nadine gossiping with only one of her friends, Hallie near by. Usually Kat and them are stuck together like gum on sidewalk, but I didn’t see the missing blonde girl anywhere. To come to think of it, I didn’t remember her sitting at the table for lunch. I took my time at the trashcan so I could listen to their hushed conversation.

“I still can’t believe she would do that! She’s our best friend. I feel so betrayed.” Nadine whispered with no amount of hurt evident in her voice. It was clear Nadine didn’t feel hurt at all, but was merely saying words.

Hallie on the other hand sounded like she was stabbed in the heart with a steak knife. “D-did you talk to Brent about it?” She stammered worried.

“No, I think you should do it. It’s more appropriate.” Nadine advised. I think she just didn’t want to have to go through the trouble to help out a friend.

Hallie sniffed as if to hold back tears. “Okay.”

There was nothing left to eavesdrop on, so I tossed my leftovers away, and went to search for Tammie and Sydney.

I’m a boy. An inexperienced boy who may be book smart, but is in no way girl smart. I’m just trying to read the signals I’m receiving, but I can’t really formulate a story behind the few sentences I picked up.

But I’m figuring my two friends could.
