I would like to say I was more refreshed the following morning. But I would be lying.

Alder and Ethan had left to harvest some cocoa. They hope to be returning within a week. They were loathed to leave, wishing to remain close for the birth.

Thankfully, Mc Burney stayed with Clay and Glen with the other unmated males. That did not deter him from making his presence known at breakfast.

Glen and McBurney's playful banter were constant, and despite my reduced movement, I gratefully retreated to the workshop to gain some semblance of peace and quiet.

Marsh stayed by my side, I knew it was to keep a watchful eye on me, but he respected my need for space and was not clingy or overbearing.

With this peace and quiet my mind started racing. Every bit of conversation, all my doubt and worries started plaguing me all at once. After sighing and huffing for what seems like hours, I eventually stood up and started pacing, needing to stretch my legs.

"Please, flower. Sit still." I gave him a frustrated look of exasperation.

"I am just worried flower. How are you feeling?" He approached slowly and started to rub my arms. Concern in his eyes.

"I have a slight headache and feel more bloated than usual." I look to my stomach and let out a giggle.

A painful kick to the ribs causes me to gasp.

"Come. I want you on bed rest for the next day."

I frown and quickly soften my features. I know he is concerned for our health, he does not mean to sound so demanding and controlling.

"At least until the headache subsides." He adds softly. One of his magic hands moves up to cup my cheek.

I lean into his touch, closing my eyes. His lips softly caress mine, and I return the kiss eagerly.

He picks me up bridal style and carries me across the courtyard.

An arrow hits its target at the centre of the courtyard. It's an alert from guardhouse.

There is a sudden rush of people. The courtyard is a hive of activity, people hiding and securing things in place.

I barely made it to our doorway as guards arrived.

I am placed on my feet and my hood is pulled up.

Six beast men approach. The only thing that distinguishes them from other beastmen is the insignia hanging around their necks that signifies they are a guard of this city.

"You all need to remain stationary whilst we conduct a check." The largest guard barks out.

Rowan stands up to his full height. "The reasons for the check?" He asks.

"Here to ensure the distribution of resources are even, and that there is nothing being brought in without our consent or any illegal items being hidden." The large guard replies without looking towards Rowan.

"What items are prohibited?" Rowan asks.

Rowan was ignored. Just as when we entered the city. They rummage and spoil a couple of things. Thankful of the males foresight and distrust the majority is hidden in underground storage.

"Can you please inform us of what is considered contraband, so that if we happen across it, we can report it straight away?" Clay tries once more.

Once again, the question was ignored, and the guards continued their search.

Not satisfied with what they have found, and the meagre tax they could instil. The guards start getting boisterous, pushing them out of the way to get behind them.
