(not actually, i just needed an excuse to talk to you before the chapter started) brace yourself, i told you i would make it worth your while (;

"since we're bringing everything up, there's been something on my mind." it hadn't been a lie, but the truth was this particular instance hadn't been on dream's mind until just seconds ago, but once it was in his brain it didn't seem to want to leave.

george turned to him with an awaiting look, eager to hear what it had been that was on the blonde's mind.

"remember when we were at the skatepark, before you were so rudely interrupted?" dream turned to him with a smile hoping the brunette would recall what he had been referring to so he wouldn't have to say it himself. "you were going to tell me about your dream."

the brunette's face fell quickly as he seemed to be remembering what the blonde was bringing up. he cringed at the memory, turning out the window to avoid displaying his unease to the blonde who had just been curious. "it's dumb."

"c'mon it had to be kind of important if you wanted to tell me about it?"

george released a sigh of defeat, like he was facing a problem he had avoided so many times before, simply because the blonde had asked him to address it. dream took that as his first sign of concern, searching the highway for an exit so he could give the brunette all of his attention. it was never easy for george to talk about himself, so when he did, dream would do anything to listen to everything he had to say.

the brunette hid behind his hands again, breathing deeply to still the fast tempo of his beating heart. "it's really dumb, i'm warning you." dream pulled off the road into an empty parking lot, and when george realized the car had stopped he turned to the blonde trying his best to explain to him without speaking.

the blonde started to rethink if asking about this dream was a good idea. he ran his hand up the brunette's thigh, hoping it had been as reassuring as he planned it to be.

george nodded with faux confidence like he was trying to convince himself he was prepared to talk now. he turned out the windshield, knowing if his eyes were to reconnect with the blonde's he'd be an emotional mess all over again. "in the dream we had been back at that party, hiding from the cops again, but when i froze up you didn't wait for me and i didn't have the strength to keep up after you." he focused on fidgeting with his trembling hands.

"that sounds terrible george." dream remembered exactly how terrified he had been the first time he was caught by cops.

"i really made it a bigger deal than i needed to." he shrugged the blanket off his shoulders, turning out his window to avoid the sympathetic look he knew the blonde was waiting to share with him.

"you know i would never have left you there, right?" dream would have gladly sacrificed himself if it meant he would get george out of that situation unscatthed.

"i know," george laughed at his response, almost like his hysteria from earlier had yet to die down. "actually it all started with that dream."

he wanted to ask what that meant, but george was already starting to answer the question.

"i started to realize how nice to me you actually were. i thought maybe i was special, but of course things like that don't work out for me. wilbur was always telling me about how you'd put other people before yourself."

the blonde would've loved to know what else wilbur had told george about himself, but again, now was not the time for questions. "c'mere." he pat his own thighs, wanting the boy to be closer than he actually had been.

george furrowed his brows, sure that dream had been missing the point. the brunette shook his head, turning down an offer he wanted nothing but to accept.

"george, please? i don't want to see you sad."

the brunette refocused on his hands, trying to calm himself without the assistance of the blonde.

"remember when i said i never wanted to be the reason you were sad? i meant that george."

finally, george looked up from his hands, glad dream always had such a comforting smile on his face. the blonde pat his thighs again, smiling harder when the boy began to step over the console, settling himself onto dream's lap. the blonde found his hands resting on the brunette's hips as he waited for him to continue.

george averted his eyes, knowing exactly what he could do in the minimal space between them. "i saw how you interacted with everyone else and i realized i wasn't special to you, and we'd never feel the same for each other. i never really told anyone about jared before, but i told you because i thought it'd scare you off. instead you stayed and made me face the problem."

dream couldn't imagine what was going on in the brunette's head but he wasn't sure he wasn't okay with the conclusion he had been coming to.

"when i kissed you i thought for sure i had messed up so bad, but you didn't make a big deal about it." george hid his face in dream's neck. "i started to feel like an idiot whenever i was around you because i started having feelings for you, and you were just being nice."

dream wrapped his arms around the boy, wanting to protect him from the terrible thoughts filling his mind. he focused on holding the boy in his arms because anything was easier to focus on than the realization george's confession had given him.

the brunette pulled from his arms, sitting up in dream's lap. he had been preparing to continue his rant, and as much as dream would've loved to listen to george, hearing the brunette talk about how much he thought he was disposable was going to tear him into pieces.

before dream could think long and hard about it, the down feeling in the car was drowned out.

he had kissed him to shut him up, yes, but it took less than a second for george to kiss back.
