General POV:
The pogues were stuck on the island for two weeks before they were rescued and brought back home. JJ and Kie finally admitted their feelings toward each other on the island. Kie was going to be sent to boarding school or she had to move out. Kie chose the pogues and she moved in with JJ for their senior year. After graduation, they went on their surf trip for a year where they got engaged.
It was a super romantic proposal in Mexico. JJ had rose petals on the beach with candles. Kie was so shocked and JJ had the most beautiful ring for her. It was very simple with 'princess' on the inside of the band.
The two were so excited to get married. They were going to get married back home at the chateau with their friends there. It was going to be small and perfect. The engagement lasted nine months and the happy couple was getting ready to return home. What JJ didn't know was that Kie had found the most perfect, simple, beachy white dress in Costa Rica for the wedding.
Kie was anxious to get home and tell Sarah everything and Cleo too. They were going to plan the wedding together. It was going to be in less than a month. The two were leaving Costa Rica tomorrow to head home.
"So where should we go travel to after the wedding?" JJ asked
"I don't know, but I think it might be nice just to be home for a while. Maybe I'll go back to school."
"Wouldn't college mean you having to get your college fund from your parents?" JJ asked annoyed that Kie was talking about her parents
"Yeah, but maybe things will be different now. We're adults and we're getting married. I want to invite them to the wedding" Kiara said nervously as it was a hard topic
Kie and JJ got into a pretty big argument about what their lives would be like after their wedding.
"I want a job that can support us. I want to have kids and be able to travel with them and give them the experiences I had growing up" Kie yelled back at JJ
"Fuck no, you want a kook life. I will not live a kook life."
"No, I don't want a kook life. I was a house with a few bedrooms for our babies, a new car, money to travel, I want my parents to know their grandchildren"
"Who said anything about babies?" JJ asked floored by the thought of babies
"I just thought that in the future someday we'd have kids together," Kiara said defensive
"Fuck no, I don't ever want to have a baby" JJ and Kiara's eyes filled with tears
"J, I don't want babies right now but for me, that's a dealbreaker. I've always wanted kids." Kiara said nervously with her voice low
The two continued to argue over how different their futures looked. JJ learned that Kiara wanted the big house filled with kids, she wanted the kook life she had growing up. Kiara learned that JJ wanted to travel as long as he could. He wanted adventure and nothing to do with having kids.
Kiara and JJ were getting ready to go to the airport. The taxi had just pulled up and JJ stopped and said, "I'm not ready to go home, Kie. You go home and I'm going to keep traveling."
"What?" Kiara asked confused as she didn't know why he didn't want to go home
"You go home, it's what you want"
"So what? Are we breaking up?"
"We want different things, Kie. It's for the best." JJ said showing no emotion
"I'm not just going to leave you. I love you, JJ" Kiara said completely broken
"Goodbye, Kie. I love you" He replied as the taxi was waiting
Kiara moved closer to JJ and JJ hugged her and he whispered, "Have a safe trip home"
JJ pulled back and he wiped the tears that were falling from Kiara's eyes with his thumb as the two maintained strong eye contact. Kiara leaned in and softly kissed JJ's lips. He didn't pull away, instead, he pulled her closer and slid his tongue into her mouth. The two would have stayed like that forever but the taxi was honking for them to hurry up. They broke apart and Kiara was bawling.
"Please come with me, JJ... I can't live without you"
"Yes you can, you will be just fine. Goodbye, princess" He said grabbing her bags and bringing them outside, and loading them into the car for her
She handed him her engagement ring back and she got into the car and flew back home.
Kiara's POV:
I cried the whole way back to OBX and when I landed all the pogues were there waiting there with a sign that said 'congrats love birds' and I was fighting back tears.
"Where's JJ?" Pope asked anxiously waiting for him
"In Costa Rica, we broke up..." I said crying
Sarah hugged me right away and everyone felt awful. I told them about the fight and they all told me that he would get over it and would come home for me. I thought about that every single day for five years and I haven't spoken to him since.
I had gone to college, graduated, and had an incredible job where I got to travel all the time as a marine biologist. I met a new guy and his name was Josh. He was amazing. He was originally from Arizona but we met when I was in Hawaii and he was now living in Charleston.
He surprised me for two year anniversary with a trip to Costa Rica. He didn't know my past and I wanted to keep it that way.
JJ's POV:
After Kie left, I was a mess for a bit but then I continued my traveling. I didn't mean to travel as much as I did, but I blinked and five years had gone by. I decided that I needed to go back to Costa Rica. I also had met this amazing girl in Mexico. She moved down there from Michigan as she hated the cold there. We had been together for three years and she did a lot of traveling with me.
We were in Costa Rica at the same resort that Kie and I stayed at. We were having so much fun going on hikes, ziplining, and surfing. It was all fun and games until we were in town one day and I walked around the corner and I literally ran into Kie. She was with some guy. We both just stood there and didn't say anything.
"Holy shit" I said breaking the silence
"You know them?" Amanda asked me
"Yeah, we were friends in high school" I simply said
Kie gave the fakest smile I've ever seen and we went through introductions and learned we were staying at the same resort. We went out separate ways and I couldn't stop thinking about her.
That night, we met up with them on the beach and had a fire, and had a few drinks. I learned more about John and she was asking Amanda a bunch of questions.
"Wow, you've been together for three and a half years? That's a long time... Have you guys thought about if you want kids?" Kiara asked Amanda as she carefully glared at me
Amanda laughed and said, "No, we haven't talked about it but I don't really want kids. I want to travel and see the world"
Wow, she really was the girl of my dreams. Not kids and wants to travel. It got late and Kie was drunk and Josh went to be almost an hour ago and Amanda just left. Kie went to open another beer when I took it from her and said, "I think you've had enough"
"You don't know anything. Stop acting like you know what's best for me" She said getting up and walking away from me. I knew exactly what she was talking about
"Kie..." I called out her name and she just kept walking
Josh thought we were besties because he asked us to go on an overnight hike with them. We agreed and we set off. Things were normal at first and we were going ziplining
Amanda went first and Kie was going next when the instructor told her that her cable was broken and she couldn't go. She was literally stuck up here as there was no way down without the cable.
"Can she go with me?" Josh asked
"No, too heavy" He replied as Josh was much taller than me but the instructor looked at me and said, "You take her"
He hooked me up and he literally just told Kie to hang onto me. It didn't seem safe at all and Kie looked terrified.
"You better not fucking kill me" She said
"I've got you, I promise," I said as she jumped into my arms and wrapped her arms and legs around me
I held onto her, tight just to make sure if she let go, I still had her. The instructor pushed me and we were flying through the trees. Kie's heart was racing and so was mine. I think we both knew it wasn't the adrenaline rush from the zipline. We made it safely to the bottom and John was a few seconds behind me and he thanked me a million times.
We were walking more when we came across these drug dealers and they had all of us at gunpoint. One of us had to reach into a tree for a surprise or they killed us. I knew the surprise was going to be bad and I volunteered to do it.
"JJ, no you can't do it." Kie said scared
"Who else is going to do it?" I asked and she looked at Josh who looked at me and he said, "I'll do it"
Josh and I both didn't know what to do. So he just reached his hand in and pulled out a box and it was literally nothing. The guys started cracking up and we walked away. There was tension between Josh and Kie.
That night at the fire we were talking about things that drove us crazy. Amanda said, "How JJ wears that stupid ring on his necklace"
"What ring does he wear?" Kie asked and I was really hoping she wouldn't
"It was my mom's ring. Only thing I have from her" I lied
We all went to bed and I couldn't sleep so I got up and walked about half a mile to the waterfall. When I got there, Kie was sitting there. She looked at me and I went and sat down next to her. She rested her head on my shoulder and said, "I was scared when you almost died today"
"So was I... is Josh pissed at you for volunteering him?"
"Let's not talk about that" She said looking down and I just laughed and she didn't say anything
"J, I'm sorry for everything"
"Nothing that happened today was your fault"
"I'm not talking about today. I'm talking about five years ago. You don't want kids and I can get over that. I clearly can't get over you. I chose a hypothetical baby and life over you. You're the one that I was already in love with and it's something that I can't get over. I never should have left you that day. I love you and you alone are enough for me. I don't need kids to be happy, but I do need you." She said with tears in her eyes
I looked into her eyes and I said, "It's funny you say that because for the last five years I've imagined our life together traveling the world, just us and it's pretty sweet. But then I imagine our life back home with us on the beach, except I'm teaching our little three-year-old son to surf while you sit watching on the beach while holding our baby daughter who is too young to walk. I was the one who was wrong. I can't imagine my life without you and our hypothetical children."
Kie was crying and so was I and then we laughed. She looked at me and then she reached to grab the chain around my neck. On that ring was her engagement ring and I said, "I haven't taken it off..."
She put the ring on her finger while the chain remained on my neck. She leaned in and she kissed me. I kissed her back and I pulled her onto my lap as we made out. We had no intention of stopping but I pulled back quickly and walked away as I heard footsteps. I saw Josh was up and he asked, "Have you seen Kiara?"
"No, I was just up to pee" I lied as I went back to bed which was a lie because. I couldn't stop thinking about what just happened. I played with the necklace around my neck
The next day, Kie was acting as she had before. Like we didn't just make out and confess our feelings to each other. We got back to the resort and we split up and I went and took a shower. Amanda kissed me and I pulled back and told her I wasn't feeling that well.
I haven't seen Kie for two days and Josh came over and asked us to come to some fancy dinner tonight with them. Amanda said yes and we got all dressed up. Kie looked fucking gorgeous in the long white dress she was wearing. I sat next to her at the table and Amanda sat next to Josh so then I was facing Amanda and Josh was across from Kie.
We were all talking and I sneakily moved my hand to Kie's thigh and I expected her to move it away. Instead, she placed her hand on mine and she moved my hand up. She was just teasing me now. We had a nice meal and Josh was super jittery and nervous. Shit. I think he's going to propose to her tonight. There was no way I was going to let that happen.
We were walking on the beach and Amanda and I stayed behind them. She pulled out her phone and got a video when Josh gave her a thumbs up from behind his back. He got down on one knee and pulled out a huge diamond ring and he proposed to the love of my life. Before Kie could say anything, I looked at Amanda and said, "I'm a shitty boyfriend to you and I'm so sorry"
I walked up to them and I said, "Kie, there is so much I could say but you already know. I love you and I need to spend the rest of my life with you. These past five years have been hell without you. Will you marry me, for real this time?"
I was down on one knee holding the pathetic engagement ring that I bought when I was nineteen. Kie looked at both of us and she looked at me and said, "Yes, I love you, J"
My heart was racing. She picked me. I got my girl back. I slipped the ring on her finger and she kissed me. We broke apart and Amanda and Josh were both pissed.
Kiara's POV:
"I'm sorry, Josh and Amanda. We should have told you guys but JJ wasn't just a friend. We were engaged five years ago before we broke it off ." I said and they were both pissed but Amanda sent us the video and they left
JJ and I also booked two tickets back to OBX for tomorrow. For tonight, we got our own little house on the beach where we got very little sleep. The next day we landed back home and I told the pogues all to meet at the chateau as I had exciting news.
I walked in alone and Sarah asked, "So you're finally engaged?!"
"Yes" I said smiling and they all cheered and I laughed and I started crying happy tears
"Promise not to freak out when he walks in?" I asked and they all promised
I went outside and I grabbed JJ's hand as we walked in and kissed each other and the pogues went crazy. We broke apart and John B asked, "So this is real? You and JJ are engaged?"
"Yeah, I got my girl back" He said and everyone hugged him
We spent the night celebrating and telling the pogues everything. JJ and I got married a month later and I wore the same dress I wore when we proposed as that was my original wedding dress. Three months later, I was pregnant with our first baby and I've never seen JJ so excited.
