A/N: Just watched HTTYD 2 again, and just. . .oh my gawd.

His First Friend and Only Lover
Everyone hated Hiccup. He was the weakling of the Vikings. While they all had strengths and muscle, he had just skin and bones. The other children could fight and carry weapons, while Hiccup could only barely lift up a shield for defence. Even his father, Stoic the Vast, felt ashamed. Everyone in the village, but one.
She wasn't as popular as Astrid, or the group she was with, but she was enough for her family to be proud of. Not only for being a true Viking, but also for her kind heart. Her kind heart, leading to being friends with Hiccup. Athena was his first and only friend.
They did everything together; helping Gobber at the blacksmith, reading, drawing and creating new weapons - Athena even worked with Hiccup and Gobber behind the counter at the blacksmith when raids from the dragons happened.
To say, everything was fine and normal, until one dragon raid where they met the Night Fury for the first time. . .

Athena and Hiccup had found Toothless, and slowly befriended each other.

Toothless was Hiccup and Athena's dragon.

Toothless, Hiccup, and Athena had saved Berk from the giant dragon that Stoic had been hunting down for years. But sadly, one was taken away. Athena had fallen further than Hiccup, and only Toothless was able to save Hiccup that day.

Athena was nowhere to be found.

Everywhere people searched for Athena for her family and Hiccup's sake, for only just recently did the two confess their love for each other. But it was too late. . .

Athena was gone.

Hiccup looked around at Berk in awe, amazed at the sight of dragons interacting with Vikings peacefully, everyone having a dragon for their own. It was just what he and Athena dreamed of. Speaking of his girlfriend. . .
"Dad," Hiccup turned to him shakily, still trying to get used to a metal leg, "where's Athena?"
Everyone around them (including the dragons) went silent, bowing their heads down. Hiccup felt his breath hitch in his throat. "Dad. . ." he choked out. "Please. . .no, it can't be. . ."
"We couldn't find her body." Stoic said sadly. "We searched everywhere, but to no vail. I'm sorry, son. . .but she's gone."
And that day turned from being the best to being the worst in Hiccup's life.

10 years later. . .
Hiccup followed his mum into her home, smiling at how homey it felt and peaceful it was. Hiccup just found out that his mum was still alive and well, and hanging around with dragons. It was amazing. She told him about how she thought that dragons could live peacefully with Vikings, only to not get heard from people, thinking it was crazy. It wasn't until she was taken by her dragon for safety did she realise it could happen.
"You know I saw what happened with you and the giant dragon all those years ago." she said matter-of-factly to him, cooking the fish they caught.
"Really?" Hiccup perked up. "You saw that?"
"Well. . .I saw the aftermath." his mother rephrased. "While you all were leaving, I saw a girl floating in the water a distance away from you all."
"W-what?" Hiccup paled, a stab of pain hitting his chest. It couldn't be. . .
"Athena. . ."
"She was barely breathing, and very injured." his mother told him, handing him his food. But Hiccup was still frozen, so she placed it beside him and sat down on the other side of him. "I took her in, and I treated her wounds. Since then, she's been living with me, telling me all the things the two of you did."
"She's. . .she's alive?" Hiccup felt excitement and adrenalin gather inside of him. "W-well where is she? Is she okay? Can I see her? Come on, let's go!" Hiccup stood up to leave the cave, only for a voice to halt him in his steps.
"I'm back! I made sure the baby dragons weren't acting too harshly around the alpha."
"Athena. . ." Hiccup whispered. Said girl finally entered, revealing her all healthy and safe and grown. Her black hair was longer and in a braid, her skin was still pale as the last time he saw her, and her bright blue eyes. . .they were at the moment full of shock and joy.
"Hiccup?" Athena wondered. "Is that you?"
"Athena? Athena!" Hiccup ran towards her and pulled her into a tight hug she gladly returned. "Oh my God! I can't believe you're here and alive!"
"What happened to your leg?" Athena glanced down worriedly.
"It's nothing," he waved off, "everyone thought you were dead - including me! We couldn't find you."
"Well, I'm okay now, Hiccup. Your mother saved me." Athena smiled at said woman. "Thank you."
"Anything for my son's lover." Hiccup's mother replied with a smile.

"Congratulations, Hiccup." Athena gave him a smile. "You're Chief now."
"Yeah, I am." Hiccup breathed out a small laugh. "And Toothless is the Alpha."
"Yeah," Athena gave Toothless a pat, "anything for his owner."
"Owners." Hiccup corrected. "You still own Toothless with me."
"Really?"
"Of course! Hey buddy!" In reply to Hiccup, Toothless lovingly nudged Athena. Athena giggled at his antics, shoving him away playfully. "Athena. . .I just want you to know, that you mean the world to me." Hiccup told her seriously. "I wouldn't have been here if it wasn't for you."
"Oh don't be silly -"
"Oh I am serious, Athena." Hiccup said, grabbing her hands. "You were my first friend before this, and you stayed by my side every moment until that tragic day where we got separated - and then we reunited! I like to think that this is fate for us; me loving you, you loving me. . ."
"Hiccup. . ." Athena gave him a watery smile. "I love you too."
"Good, which is why I am going to do this." Hiccup took a deep breath in and went down on one knee in front of her, in front of everyone. Everyone gasped in anticipation. "Athena, you are my first friend and my first lover, and if it wasn't for you, I wouldn't be the man I am today. And I love you so much I promise to cherish you and love you everyday. Athena, will you marry me?"
"Of course!" Athena knelt down and gave him a passionate kiss. She pulled away with a disgusted look on her face, having just kissed Hiccup who was covered with Toothless' slobber. Everyone around her (even Hiccup) laughed at her reaction. "Yuck! I am not kissing you until you wash your face!"
"Oh come here, you." Hiccup brought her into his arms again and gave her another kiss.

And that, my friends, was the story about his first friend and his only lover.
