AUTHOR'S POV
"You forgot this."
Your brother pushed a penguin plushie in your hands. It was your lucky item for the day.
"Thanks, Taro."
"Hurry up and go. You'll be late for the train."
You tried to place the rather large toy in your bag only for its head to poke out of the top. You sighed.
I have to hold it, you thought. You held the toy in your hand and zipped your bag shut. You waved your brother goodbye and jogged to the train station. Unluckily for you, the train was packed like a can of sardines. You would wait for the next one but that would mean being late. You internally groaned and found a spot to stand in.
You got weird looks from people but ignored them. This wasn't the first time you took the train with a weird item in hand.
Finally, it was time for you to get off. Given your height, it was easy for people to make way for you. You were always thankful to be nearly the same height as your brother.
"At least your lucky item is cute this time."
You turn your head to the voice of your friend calling you.
"Hello Futakuchi," you reply, still not stopping your walk.
"Morning, Mido-chan."
"I told you to call me Y/n."
"And I told you I'd call you what I want, beautiful."
You gave him a questioning look. "Beautiful?"
"I only speak the truth."
"Unfortunately for you teammates, you do," you replied, hinting at his quote-on-quote bratty behaviour.
"That hurt my feelings, Mido-chan."
"I'm sure."
Sadly for your peace of mind, you wouldn't be able to escape Futakuchi until the end of the day. You were stuck in his class, 2-A. To make it worse, he kept sending you messages during the lectures. You ignored them all for the sake of your grades. When you checked your phone at lunchtime, you had 50 new notifications: 25 from Kise, 24 from Futakuchi and 1 from your brother.
"Taro doesn't usually text me."

I don't want to.
"You'll answer your brother but not me?"
"Yes."
"So cold, Mido-chan."
You looked for your lunch in your bag while Futakuchi kept talking your ears off. It was nowhere to be found. You groaned, laying your head on the penguin. I don't have any money to buy food either.
"Mido-chan, come on."
"I don't want to move."
"I can carry you—"
"—I refuse."
Futakuchi chuckled. "I know you forgot your lunch. I can buy something for you in exchange for a date."
"I'll starve, thank you," you replied with a blank stare.
"Wow, I was only kidding about the date," Futakuchi whined, clutching his chest. "I'll be back in a minute."
You hummed in reply, putting your arms around your lucky item. You placed your glasses at the corner of your desk and closed your eyes. "I might as well take a nap and conserve energy."
Considering you had Kise in your entourage, the noise in the class didn't stop you from falling asleep. When Futakuchi returned he decided against waking you up. He placed the food in your bag with a note and left. You slept through your lunch period only to wake up at the sound of the bell. You stared at the penguin pillow still trying to clear up your blurry vision. Your hand clipped your glasses, pushing them off your desk. You clicked your tongue, reaching around the floor to find them.
"You're blind as a bat."
"Bats aren't actually blind," you told Futakuchi, who placed the glasses in your hand. "Thanks."
You sighed, your vision now restored and grabbed your notes. You noticed the food and note in your bag.

You ignored his cringe message and started taking notes. A piece of crumpled paper landed on your desk. Knowing he'd send more if you didn't read it, you did.
I'm sad. You're ignoring me a lot today.
You wrote him a reply and returned the paper. You heard snickering. He tossed the paper back to you, hitting your head in the process. He sank into his seat when you glared. To earn your forgiveness, he made a finger-heart and you returned it without much thought. Whether it was from the heart or the glare you gave him earlier, he stopped bothering you for the rest of class. He didn't send you a single text until classes were dismissed. On the way to your locker your phone buzzed.

You looked at your phone confused. Weird, you thought. You stuffed it in your bag and jogged to the gym. You glanced at your wrist for time and hit a wall. Your glasses were tossed along with your balance. Lucky for you, someone caught you.
"What would you be without me, Mido-chan?"
"Completely fine," you quickly answered. "Can you let me go?"
Futakuchi pulled you upright and leaned down, grabbing your glasses. "Even with these you still manage to bump into people."
You saw your vision go from Minecraft blocks to realistic human outlines. "I was checking the time," you replied. "Sorry for bumping into you, Aone."
He nodded and you assumed he was okay. Futakuchi told him to make sure the others start training. "I'll be there in a minute," he told him.
He waited until Aone left to give you his full attention. "So why are you in such a hurry?"
Your eye twitched. "Oh, I was just heading home. If you'll excuse me—"
"—I'm kidding. Don't be mad."
"Hurry up. I have a train to catch."
"You can always stay over."
"Futakuchi."
"Right, my bad. I wanted to ask if you were free tomorrow afternoon."
You checked your calendar and it was clear. "I am, why?"
"We're going somewhere after school. Tell your brother you're staying over."
"Staying over? For what? Where are you taking me?"
"Surprise."
"Futakuchi."
"At least let me keep the date location a secret," he says with a sigh. "I know you'll like it."
"A d-date?! I never agreed to a date, nanodayo!"
He smirked. "Someone's nervous."
"I'm not!"
"Your tick only comes out when you're nervous or embarrassed."
You glared at him for knowing you so well. "It doesn't, dayo—! I'm leaving."
You walked past him but his arm blocked your path. "Don't forget this."
He handed you the plush penguin you dropped earlier. You ripped it from his arm, a little angry with his constant teasing. "Thanks."
"Lucky for you, I picked it up."
"...That was a terrible pun."
Futakuchi laughed. "I know. That's why I said it. See you tomorrow." He ran back to the gym after a small wave. Luckily your shoes were already on, so you ran straight to the station. The train was a lot emptier than this morning and people seemed to be minding their own business.
You are lucky, you thought, looking at the toy in your arms. You thought back to your little meetup with Futakuchi and pulled out your phone.

Just when you put it away, it buzzed. You checked the lit screen.

You unlocked your phone to see the rest of the message. If Kise was involved, you doubt it was going to go smoothly.

You locked the screen, put your phone on silent and placed it at the furthest corner of your bag. You knew your face is red and did your best to ignore it. You tightened your hold on the penguin.
