AUTHOR'S POV
Another regular day at Karasuno. With the appearance of a special permanent guest.
"Class, we have a new student today. I hope you can all welcome her warmly."
A quiet girl walks into the class. She has (h/c) hair and (e/c) eyes. She holds her head down, lightly bowing to the class. "My name is L/n F/n. I hope we can all get along."
"Welcome to Karasuno. Please have a seat beside Tsukishima."
F/n peers at her classmate. She quietly takes her seat, greeting Tsukishima. The boy surprisingly answers. There's something off about this girl. Why is she always staring at his lips?
TIME SKIP
"We have a practice match against Seijoh. Are you coming?" Yamaguchi asks. Unfortunately, he isn't facing her. She didn't hear a thing. He taps her shoulder. F/n turns around. "Gomen, Yamaguchi-san."
"Yamaguchi is just fine, L/n. I was wondering if you were coming to the practice match against Seijoh."
She gives him a quick nod, gathering her things. "I'll see you two tomorrow."
She leaves with quiet steps like she always did.
"L/n is nice isn't she, Tsukki."
"She's hiding something."
TIME SKIP [SEIJOH PRACTICE MATCH]
F/n is lost in the halls. After going to the bathroom, she lost sight of the group. "I hope I'm not late."
Oikawa sees her frantically looking everywhere. "Hey, cutie."
F/n keeps looking around. She turned, jumping at the sight of Oikawa in her face. As much as it helped her communicate, she'd rather stay away from stranger's faces. Oikawa took the time to look her over. A girl, a cute girl from Karasuno. She's certainly more eye-catching than his fangirls. "What are you doing here all alone?"
"I got lost."
"I don't mind helping you out."
"Really? Thank—"
"But how about you go on a date with me if I do?"
F/n feels uncomfortable. She backs away, bumping into someone else. She looks up, relieved. Tsukishima is here and he looks pissed. "Can't do anything without help can you?"
"I'm sorry, Tsukishima-san."
"Come with me," he says, taking her hand. He sends Oikawa a hard look, making the make smirk. F/n has trouble keeping up with Tsukishima's longer strides. "Could you please slow down?"
"Tsk"
He slows his pace, still not letting go of her hand. They return to the gym where Takeda-sensei was worried about her. "Thank goodness he found you."
"I'm sorry for the trouble, sensei."
"It's fine."
F/n stays with Kiyoko the entire time only momentarily talking with the boys. She keeps a close eye on anything that could be headed her way since she'd never heard it coming. For a moment she looks down. A ball heads straight for her. People yell watch out but she doesn't hear a thing. Tsukishima blocks the oncoming ball, causing her to look up at the source of shade on her notes. "What are you doing Tsukishima-san?"
"Do you never pay attention to your surroundings?"
"Huh?"
"Are you that—"
"N-No could you repeat that? I didn't quite get it."
Tsukishima pauses, piecing things together. "Nevermind. Just be more careful next time."
"Okay."
"Yamaguchi, keep an eye on her."
"Hai, Tsukki."
Tsukishima is back on the court but always looked her way. He can see the little things she does to hear what others are saying without having a sound go through her ears. He decides to confront her after.
TIME SKIP
As F/n gathers her things, Tsukishima comes in telling her to hurry up. She quickly packs what's left, following him. "Where are we going?"
He doesn't answer, only pulling her along by the hand. When he deems them far enough from the team he turns around to ask the magic question. "You're deaf, aren't you?"
F/n gaps. She looks down, in shame of her problem. "Yes."
Tsukishima gently pulls her head back up. "Don't look down when we talk idiot. You can't read my lips while looking at the floor."
"S-Sorry."
"How?"
"A bike accident followed by a bad infection the same year. The hearing loss is permanent... They couldn't do anything to fix my hearing."
Tsukishima sighs. "Who else knows?"
"Takeda-sensei, Kiyoko-senpai and Ukai-san are the only ones on the team. I told them not to tell the others."
"Why?"
F/n nervously holds the edge of her jacket. "I don't want them to treat me differently..."
"They won't look down on you," he tells her. "Have some confidence."
F/n's eyes tear up.
Confidence
The thing she desperately lacked. Ever since her hearing loss, it plummeted. Permanently losing her hearing made her hyperfocus on everything. She was as independent as they could be. But when it came to walking head up, she never could. Because no matter what, she'd always have to get help for something. And that bothered her.
"I'm sorry..."
Tsukishima holds her chin, using his hand to wipe her tears. "Don't apologize. You can work on it. I'll even help you."
She's grateful and starts crying again. "Thanks, Tsukishima-san."
"Stop crying. You look ugly when you cry."
"You're not helping you know," she sniffles.
"...I want to help you. Let me be your ears," he says, seriously.
It takes a moment for F/n to fully process what he said. "R-Really?! You would do that?"
He nods. F/n's face explodes with happiness. "Thank you, Tsukishima-san!"
"No need to get all emotional. I can't have the others thinking I made you cry." He holds her hand again. "And call me Tsukki."
F/n smiles. "Okay then, Tsukki."
He avoids her gaze while they joined the group at the gates. After F/n explains everything, she's covered in hugs. They all tell her they'd never think any less of her because of her disability. It made her feel a lot better.
"Thank you, everyone!"
"So Tsukishima, wanna explain why you came here holding hands?" Tanaka inquires, wiggling his eyebrows. The middle blocker scoffs. "There's not much to explain. I was making sure she didn't get lost."
Tanaka wasn't buying it. Neither was everybody else. But they'd rather not instigate the salt shaker's wrath.
Time passed, matches went by and the Tokyo training camp arrived. F/n's parents gave her permission to join the boys. Tsukishima personally offered to be her buddy during the trip. His teammates were shocked.
They were curious. He had gotten close to F/n lately. It was rare to see one without the other. But no one would question what was going on.
When it was time for the barbecue, F/n stayed by Tsukishima's side, not eating much, feeling rather sleepy. Her head dips against his arm, making him glance at her. She's fast asleep. As he opened his mouth to scold her he stops, smiles and returns to ignoring everyone.
Kuroo and Bokuto watch the pair with scheming eyes.
"Are you thinking what I'm thinking?"
"I think I'm thinking what you're thinking."
"Plan get-Tsukki-a-girlfriend is in action."
Little did they know, love was already in the air.
TIME SKIP
"Why is your hair still wet?"
F/n still trying to get water off her face dust answer. He places his hand on the towel. She looks up, water still trickling down her face. "What is it?"
"Why is your hair still wet?"
"I just finished showering."
"Come here before you catch a cold."
He properly dries her hair before they cuddle on his mat. "Kei?"
He taps on her back once. A code they made up meaning yes.
"Do you like me?"
Two taps, no
She looks up at him, shocked. He kisses her forehead. "I don't like you. I love you, idiot."
"Don't scare me like that!"
"I'm tired now. Goodnight F/n."
She sighs, getting comfortable. "You're unbelievable."
"You're incredible," he answers back. Although F/n doesn't hear a word, she knew he e good. She falls into a peaceful sleep. In the arms of her salty middle blocker boyfriend.
BONUS SCENE
"Tsukki dude, where's F/n?"
"She's helping Kiyoko-san. Why?"
"You love her right?"
"Why wouldn't I love my girlfriend?"
"Wait Tsukki dude is dating?!?"
"Good job, Tsukki."
The said boy has a smug look on his face. "I know right. Such a pity you two are still single."
"HEY!"
