"Dan, I don't think you've ever truly lived."

Dan raised his head and stared at her.
She was looking at him.

"The past is the past though, you have to look to the future, " she said quietly.
Dan's eyes lowered.

"There is no future, at least for me, " he whispered.
Dan heard footsteps moving towards him.

He felt a shadow and looked up. She loomed over him her golden, waist-length hair. It swayed with the wind.

Her eyes were unnatural—serpent-like.

She smiled softly and took his hands.
His eyes widened. She pulled him up and she stared up at him.
She placed a hand on his cheek gently.

"Close your eyes, " she whispered.
He didn't.

She smirked.
"You're hard-headed aren't you?" She chuckled.

"I promise I won't bite."

For some reason, a haze came over him and his eyes fluttered shut.

"Don't listen to her, " he heard the voice of his angel, but it sounded so distant.

"Think about her, think about Lily, " she said softly.

Dan bit his lip to stop his emotions from spilling over.

He pictured her long auburn hair as she leaned her head gently on his shoulder.

"Now, open your eyes, " she whispered.
Dan opened his eyes slowly.

Forest-green eyes stared back at him.
His eyes widened.

The rays that got through reflected off auburn hair.

"Lily?" It was barely a breath.
She smiled. His heart raced in his chest.

He took a step closer and held her cheek.

"Is it really you?" he whispered.
She nodded, the smile never leaving her beautiful face.

"I'm so s-" She placed a finger on his lips.

"Enough apologising, " she whispered. Her voice did something to him. She placed a hand on his cheek and he closed his eyes, savouring the feel of her.

He opened his eyes, they looked somewhat dazed.
Her hand wasn't the only thing he wanted to savour.

He pulled her gently to him.

"Daniel, stop."

He heard that incessant voice again, but he didn't want to.

He leaned down and kissed her.
He kissed her like he would never kiss anyone again.

After several moments, he pulled back.

He stared at her lips and traced it with his thumb.

There was blood. He leaned down and kissed her again, this time, more urgently.

She held on to him as he assaulted her lips.

Finally, he pulled back-his yellow eyes glowing.

Dan licked his lips as he stared into her eyes.

Yes, they were the eyes he knew, but they weren't Lily's.

Lily was gone, and she wasn't coming back. He'd come to terms with that.
He'd just wanted to make himself feel like he was kissing her once last time.

He closed his eyes and stepped back.

"You can turn back now."

The image of Lily morphed into the mermaid's. Her eyes were wide with shock.
