Chapter 23 Memories

I had fallen asleep with Aaron by my side. I fell into one of my nightmares. I was running home. Since mother had fallen ill I had taken over her responsibilities. Father wouldn't hit her, but now I could hear the profanities he shouted at her. Last week for my sixteenth birthday she had taken me to get hearing aids. I had gone to the store and I was running late to get dinner going. Dinner was supposed to be served at 5:30 sharp. If it was even a half second late there would be hell to pay.

I walked into the kitchen scrambling to put things away at the same time I was pulling stuff out to start dinner. I was making cheeseburgers and veggie fries. It would be quick and simple. It was all the time I had to make. I made dinner quickly, also setting the table. The boys were at football and wrestling practice. By 5:20 I had everything on the table and I was quickly cleaning up the kitchen. No messes were allowed to exist even for a moment.

The scene quickly changed to later that night when father came into my room. "Sweetie, wake up," his voice drawled. The sound I had once probably found comforting now scared me, not that I could hear it now. I slept without my hearing aids. I had slept for years in silence. I had also grown up in it. Now being able to hear was scary and loud. The silence I had found comforting. Suddenly he was there, kneeling on my bed. He flipped me over.

"You have another role you need to step into for your mother." I read his lips and what he said scared me. I felt panic start to rise in me, running cold through my veins.

"Aaron!" I called waking up from my nightmare that night father had raped me and I was still dealing with what had happened a few months ago. Unfortunately, this became routine. Aaron came through the door and I held my arms open asking for a hug. He came over to me knowing what I was asking for. He didn't even bother to ask what the dream was about, he knew. I had started sleeping in his room after that night when he was home, but when he and Sean weren't I was fair game to fill in for my mother to what my father wanted to do to me.
