•Count On It•

Start from the beginning

"I knew you'd cry about it, " He settles, Y/N splashing him as he laughs. "I'm joking buttons, I'm sorry, " Mark clears his throat, wiping his face. "I wonder if I can touch the bottom, " He thinks aloud, swallowing. Without much thought, he takes a deep breath, going under. Y/N suddenly shivers, realizing in the silence just how alone they really were, hearing the crickets and silent symphony of the forest at night.

Mark surfaced moments later, happy that he could, in fact, touch the bottom, proving it to them with a rock he brought up. Y/N smiles to themselves, both of them swimming around and splashing each other for a while. They liked this. This was exactly what they needed after the chilling familiarity of something bad coming. Y/N was fully determined to do one thing tonight, no matter the consequences: let go.

"Mark?" Y/N coughs slightly. "Do you think we can stay here? For the rest of the night?" They ask, Mark moving his wet hair back, sniffling,

"You mean in the water?" Y/N shakes their head, laughing breathily.

"Here. This place. In the back of your truck, " They explain, and Mark seemed taken aback. Y/N wanted to sleep under the stars with him- which he knew meant the ultimate form of trust at this point. He nods mindlessly, then full of confidence.

"Yes. Yeah, that's- yes that will work, " Mark agrees, wiping his eyes.

"M-Mark?" They whisper, his gentle eyes regarding them carefully. "I'm kind of scared, " Mark smiles in understanding, swimming closer to them.

"Look at me buttons, " Mark reaches out, putting his hands on their arms. "I would never let anything hurt you. Never, " He hums, glancing over their features as Y/N gazes at him in a daze, lips parting slightly. "I'll put some music on when we get out, I will leave a light on all night, and I'm going to be with you. Nothing and no one is going to hurt you. I cross my heart, " Making Y/N's heart skip a beat, he cups their face with both hands for a second, but they watch something change in his eyes, realizing what he was doing. "U-Uh, " He lets them go quickly, clicking his tongue. "Um- are you-? Did you want to get out now? I'll get out first and get you a towel if you are, " He asks, Y/N pondering it.

"Um- sure. I'm pretty tired now, but um-" Y/N nods a little. "Thank you, " They whisper with a smile, Mark giving a soft grin back, before beginning to swim back toward the bank, Y/N feeling almost giddy as they look away. He's being such a gentleman- it's really cute. They start swimming as he gets out, giggling as they watch him race around, coming back to the shoreline with a towel as he said he would.

"Here you go, " Mark holds it fully spread out, purposefully not looking at them as much as he wanted to.

"Thank you, Mark. But you already saw me anyway, " Y/N laughs, letting him wrap it around them.

"Well yeah. But I just want you to know for a fact that I still respect you. I'm not just going to stare at a practically naked person and make them feel uncomfortable, " He glances at them, shrugging a little. "Not that I can see you very well without my glasses- but I still want you to have some sense of comfort and privacy, " Mark turns away, walking back to his truck as Y/N feels their heart flutter, drying themselves off with the towel. By god why does he seem cuter tonight? It's getting harder to keep it locked in.

"Thank you, Mark. For everything tonight, " Y/N wipes their face, watching Mark bustle about.

"No thanks necessary buttons. It's a pleasure, " Mark assures, Y/N clicking their tongue as they look down. "Okay this is- I know it's gonna sound really creepy but- I do have an extra set of clothes that I keep with me for things like this. And I just- I mean if you want- I-I just know how itchy jeans can feel when you're sleeping and I-I know you're not gonna want to sleep in just your underwear and I-" Mark rambles a little, Y/N holding back a laugh as they shake their head.
