Tony watched the doorway, waiting for you to walk in.
You always came into his lab, breakfast in hand, and you would eat together.
As if he had called out to you, you entered.
He noticed how sad you looked, but plastered a smile on your face.
You had been on a mission the week before and hadn’t truly smiled since.
He figured something had gone wrong on the mission.
As you sat next to him, your leg accidentally brushed his and his heart fluttered in his chest.
Can't explain all the feelings that you're making me feel
My heart's in overdrive and you're behind the steering wheel
You were a SHIELD agent who had been sent by the new director, who was being kept a secret, to help Tony clean up after the events of Civil War.
You were amazing at helping the mess go away, only leaving Tony’s memories as the bit of proof he had that anything had even happened.
You were better than Pepper had been at making his problems disappear.
He had asked you to stick around at Rhodey’s request because Rhodey noticed how you helped Tony feel… almost normal.
Touching you, touching me
touching you, god you're touching me
He knew everything about you, amazed at how you had let him into your life.
At first, he had been sure that he was nothing but your mission.
Now, he felt like he was an actual friend.
He never asked about SHIELD, afraid to push you away, but now he needed to know what had hurt you.
You knew all of his problems and bad experiences. You comforted him after his nightmares and talked him through his panic attacks.
The least he could do was be your shoulder to cry on.
You had been eating in silence when he decided to speak up.
“What happened on the mission, Y/N?” he asked softly.
Your head hung and he wasted no time pulling you into his arms.
“A friend of mine, a newbie to the team, he saved us all by killing himself and the enemy. The enemy who had once to been a friend. And my other friend, his girlfriend and long time team member, she lost it. She took off. We have no idea where she is. It’s just… Why does everything have to go bad?” you spoke.
He held you tighter, not knowing what to say that would comfort you.
I believe in a thing called love
Just listen to the rhythm of my heart
There's a chance we could make it now
We'll be rocking 'til the sun goes down
I believe in a thing called love
Ooh!
“I can’t promise you nothing will ever go wrong again,” he found himself saying, “But I can promise you I will always be here for you if something does.”
You smiled at him, a small genuine smile.
You kissed his cheek.
“Thank you, Tony,” you said.
He wanted to tell you how he felt, pour his heart out right there.
But he knew better.
He knew he had to wait, to find a better time.
He wanted it to be special.
He watched as you stood, beginning to clean up the empty trays and crumbs.
You began to walk out of the lab and he kept his gaze on you.
“Please look back, please look back,” he whispered to himself.
He had once heard that when when someone you care about looks back at you when walking away, it meant that you would be in their thoughts and they cared about you too.
As you reached the doorway, you turned your head and gave him another smile before leaving.
“Yes,” he grinned in victory.
I wanna kiss you every minute, every hour, every day
You got me in a spin but everythin' is A.OK!
Later on, as you were talking to Rhodey as he did his physical therapy, he couldn’t help but imagining himself rushing over there and just planting one on you.
“Screw it,” he huffed, before strutting over to you.
Rhodey noticed his friend, and took a few steps backwards. He knew that look in Tony’s eyes, determination.
You turned to face Tony, hearing his footsteps.
Before you could greet him, he wrapped his arms around your waist and pulled you close to him, kissing you.
Touching you, touching me
touching you, god you're touching me
“I fucked up, I fucked up,” is all Tony could think as he kissed you.
Just as he was about to pull away, he felt your lips move against his.
Holy shit, you were kissing back!
He only kissed you harder.
Breathing? Who needed to breathe? He just wanted to keep kissing you, forever.
I believe in a thing called love
Just listen to the rhythm of my heart
There's a chance we could make it now
We'll be rocking 'til the sun goes down
I believe in a thing called love
Ooh! Guitar!
You were the one to pull away, blushing terribly.
“So, that happened,” you said.
“You kissed back,” Tony pointed out, feeling his own face burn.
“And I witnessed it,” Rhodey said, gaining the attention of both, “Yeah, that’s right, I’m still here.”
You and Tony looked at each other, laughing.
“I love you,” Tony declared.
You stopped laughing.
“Dude, come on. You’re supposed to confess and then kiss,” Rhodey said.
“No one asked for your commentary,” Tony retorted.
“I love you, too, Tony,” you smiled, pecking his lips.
Touching you, touching me
touching you, god you're touching me
Tony wasted no time kissing you again, slower this time.
“Seriously, gonna do this again?” Rhodey complained, “This is supposed to be me time.”
You were again the first one to pull away.
“I’m sorry Rhodey,” you apologized.
“No, Y/N, you did nothing wrong,” Rhodey said, “I want an apology from Mr. Stank.”
“I’m sorry that we’re friends,” Tony joked.
“Oh, so you wanna play it like that? Okay,” Rhodey responded.
You chuckled at the pair’s antics.
I believe in a thing called love
Just listen to the rhythm of my heart
There's a chance we could make it now
We'll be rocking 'til the sun goes down
I believe in a thing called love
Ooh!
“Hey, Y/N, did you know that Tony’s been in love with you since you first met, and just hid it all this time?” Rhodey told you.
Tony’s eyes widened.
“What?” you asked.
“And one time, when he was really drunk he-,” Rhodey began to say to you.
“Rhodes!”
