You woke up to the weight shifting on the other half of the bed.
Dean was awake again.
He did this every night.
You were in the bunker, living with both Winchester boys and their angel.
You were a hunter, too, but since you started dating Dean, you found yourself more on edge in unfamiliar territory.
You sat up and looked at Dean.
He was holding his head in his hands.
"Another nightmare?" you asked softly.
He nodded.
"Yeah, sorry," he said.
You wanted to help him, but you didn't know how.
Your maternal instinct switched on and gave you the perfect idea.
"Can i try something to help?" you asked.
Dean looked over at you.
"I guess," he said.
"Lay down," you told him.
He raised an eyebrow and you laughed.
"I think i like where this is going," he tried to joke, but it came out desparate.
"Just trust me," you said softly.
Dean sighed and laid down beside you.
You laid down and held him close to you.
"Carry on my wayward son
There'll be peace when you are done
Lay your weary head to rest
Don't you cry no more," you sang softly.
Dean was silent, looking up at you.
You hesitated for a minute, but continued.
"Once I rose above the noise and confusion
Just to get a glimpse beyond this illusion
I was soaring ever higher, but I flew too high
Though my eyes could see I still was a blind man
Though my mind could think I still was a mad man
I hear the voices when I'm dreaming,
I can hear them say."
You watched Dean's eyes flutter shut.
You knew this tactic was working.
You smiled slightly in victory before singing the chorus.
"Carry on my wayward son,
There'll be peace when you are done
Lay your weary head to rest
Don't you cry no more."
You felt Dean's breathing calm.
You soon heard his snores and knew he was asleep.
You were about to close your own eyes until the door opened.
You noticed a shy Sam and questioning Castiel.
You raised a curious eyebrow.
Sam's puppy eyes said it all and you chuckled quietly.
"Come on," you nodded.
Sam slipped into the bed on your other side, laying next to your other arm.
Castiel laid down at the bottom to avoid both brothers, laying his head on your stomach.
You cleared your throat a little before continuing the song from where you left off.
"Masquerading as a man with a reason
My charade is the event of the season
And if I claim to be a wise man,
Well, it surely means that I don't know
On a stormy sea of moving emotion
Tossed about, I'm like a ship on the ocean
I set a course for winds of fortune,
But I hear the voices say," you sang softly.
Sam was the first to close his eyes.
You could see the pain resident on his face, but as he drifted off, it turned into peace.
You could sense Castiel's discomfort and continued the song, hoping it would help.
"Carry on my wayward son
There'll be peace when you are done
Lay your weary head to rest
Don't you cry no more no."
You noticed Castiel close his eyes and join the Winchester brothers in sleep.
You decided to finish the song, just in case.
The three definitely needed as much peace as they could get.
If a simple song gave it to them, then why not.
"Carry on,
You will always remember
Carry on,
Nothing equals the splendor
Now your life's no longer empty
Surely heaven waits for you," you sang.
You felt your eyes begin to droop.
You looked at the three boys around you.
There was Dean, the love of your life and your hero.
There was Sam, your best friend and nerd buddy.
There was Castiel, the innocent child and emergency back-up.
But then you noticed what was underneath.
Dean was the broken soldier, who was ready to lay down his life for his family.
Sam was the depressed boy, who felt he owed the world because of his mistakes.
Castiel was the fallen angel, who was cast down by his family for trying to do the right thing.
All three were lost in life and had no understanding of how to deal with the pain they felt inside.
You couldn't take it away, but you could help ease it, slowly.
And you were sure as hell going to try.
"Carry on my wayward son
There'll be peace when you are done
Lay your weary head to rest
Don't you cry,
Don't you cry no more," you sang, your tiredness taking over.
You settled down and closed your eyes.
You felt Dean cuddle further into your hold.
Sam had his arms wrapped around your arm, hugging it tight.
You used your empty hand to gently run through Castiel's hair, but careful not to move from Sam's grip.
These boys were your family and you absolutely loved them.
After all, family doesn't end in blood.
And you were ready to help them all through these hard times.
They didn't deserve to suffer.
"No more."
