Ian worked at an animal shelter because it was the only place hiring. The pay wasn't to bad, but the way people acted was pretty annoying. Asking for kittens that weren't medically challenged. Puppies that weren't missing anything they needed, that kind of thing.
But he damn sure didn't sign up for cute drunk Asian guys stumbling in crying about wanting to let dogs. "It's all I want! Why is it so hard to understand?" He sobbed. He'd come by enough for Ian to find out that his name was Joji, and that his apartment wasn't dog friendly. So he let him stumble in, always taking him to the room of puppies and avoiding the door that had the older dogs in it. One day Joji managed to slit out, "where are the broken dogs? I want to pet the sad old doggies," Ian couldn't help but smile at that. He opened the door opposite from the puppies and he saw Joji start to cry again. "Why are there so many! They're so cute! I want them all!" He opened the cage of a dog missing her back leg. "What happened?" He asked. Ian looked at her sadly. "She got her leg stuck in a bear trap. He had to cut it off because the leg was dead and rotting." Joji sobbed harder, pulling the dog close and kissing her head and mumbling of how much of a good girl she was.
It took well over Ian's shift for Joji to look at all of the dogs, and he made Ian promise that he'd adopt the one oldest dog who didn't have his ears or tail. Ian let Joji watch him sign the adoption papers and walk out of the room with the dog on a leash. "You can walk him if you want, but only when you're sober." Ian said. Joji nodded and kisses the dog on the head and hugged Ian. "Thank you for being a good person," Joji mumbled. Ian couldn't help but laugh.
