I panicked and immediately sat up, thinking that Zoe had died, I began to shake her. As I was shaking her, I heard little footsteps rush over to me, and when I looked up, I saw Winter with a worried look on her face.

She crouched down by my side and poked at zoe, then looked to me.
"Are you okay, mama? Did I get the bad guy?"
My heart shattered as I read her note.
"I..she..she wasn't...a bad person, Winter."
Her face went from worried to sad.
"Did I do something bad?"

My daughter just shot my long lost best friend right in front of my eyes...
But I couldn't blame her, or be mad. For all she knew, Zoe had a gun to my head and was about to kill me. She was just trying to protect me, I know that...but I couldn't help but feel heartbroken.

I let out a deep sigh and shook my head.
"No, you did what you thought was right."
"But...you seem sad.."
"She was my friend."
Winter looked down at her feet in guilt, so I stroked her hair.
"It's okay, Winter. I know you were just trying to protect me. I'm..."
I cupped her cheek and let out a shaky breath.
"I'm very proud of you."

I turned back to Zoe and flipped her onto her back, Winter trying to help me to make up for her mistake.

Once Zoe was flipped over, I began to examine her, looking for where she got shot, hoping that somehow, maybe, I could save her. It took me a while, but eventually, I found it and as soon as I did, I was both relived and very pissed off.

I slapped Zoe hard in the chest and she immediately sat up, gasping and holding her chest dramatically.
"I thought you fucking died, you idiot! What did you play dead for!?"
She looked to me, then pretended to faint dramatically, so I slapped her again.
"Get your stupid-ass back up before I actually kill you."

Zoe had been shot in her hand. There was a huge hole in it. The bullet had gone completely through. But it was far from a fatal wound. I mean, it definitely hurt, but, she wouldn't die. Winter must've missed her head and shot her hand as it was raised at me, instead. Guess we're both lucky she's not an ace shot yet..

I stood up and once I did, Zoe began to roll around on the floor dramatically. She held her hand and began to fake cry and kick her legs.

"It's killed meh! It's killed meh!"
I rolled my eyes at her and kicked her side.
"Yeah, whatever Draco Malfoy."
She stopped and looked up to me.
"You're so heartless! I got shot!"
I crossed my arms at her.
"I'll suspend my sympathy as you shot me first."
She slowly sat up and reached out her arm, asking me to help her up, so I did.
"Oh, yeah. I forgot about that."
"How are you still alive..."
She grinned and nudged my shoulder.
"Says you."
She was about to say something else, but then she noticed Winter.
"Woah, since when did you have a little sister?"
She shook her head, then looked to me in shock.
"No..a secret love child!?"
I rested my head in my hand and pointed to Winter.
"Winter is my daughter."
Then I looked to Winter and pointed at Zoe.
"Winter, this is your aunt Zoe. Don't ever copy anything she does."
Zoe looked to me and pouted.
"You hid a kid from me all these years? I'm offended!"
"Obviously not, stupid. I found her a few months ago and adopted her."
"Ahhh. That makes much more sense!"
"I swear you don't use your head sometimes...Is it just for decoration?"
Zoe slung her arm around my shoulder and blew her fringe out of her face.
"For decoration, obviously. Have you seen how gorgeous I am?"
"Rightttt"

I felt a tugging on my leg and looked down to see Winter trying to grab my attention, so I shrugged Zoe off and crouched down to her level.

She tapped my jacket, then began to write a note.
"Are you okay, mama?"
I ruffled her hair and nodded.
"I just need to rest and patch up."
I felt Zoe lean over my shoulder.
"Why's she writing? Can't she speak?"
I shook my head.
"No, she talks by writing. I..I'm not sure why she can't speak.."
I smiled and looked over my shoulder at Zoe.
"Doesn't stop her from being sassy though."
As soon as I said that, Winter kicked my legs and huffed.
"Bad mama! You need to be more careful!"
Zoe snorted and ripped a piece of her shirt off, beginning to bandage her hand.
"Never thought I'd see the day you get told off by a kid."
"Me neither. The world's a weird place."
Winter kicked my leg again.
"I'm being serious! Fix your wounds now!"
Zoe snorted again and I surrendered.
"Alright, alright. Go get me my bag and I'll patch up."
She nodded with a 'that's more like it' face, then hurried off to the tank to get my bag.
