Veils

Grey's POV

Reign and Paige just came back from the Underworld, and they brought the most interesting news and piece of information.

The council is dead. All of them were found hanging on a veil turned noose. Everyone's saying it was suicide, a premonition of the chaos that's to come.

Other oracles are worried, as well. They think that the council saw a vision that led them to kill themselves. They also believe that the world is ending again. For real this time, because unlike before, during the time of our parents, there were prophecies, but now, there's none.

The council left nothing but their lifeless bodies.

"Henri killed them," sabi ko sa mga kasama kong nakapalibot sa dining table ng templo ni Cronus, kung saan kami pinatawag at tinipon ni Reign. "I'm sure."

"Oracles don't commit suicide," Paige added. "And if they did, they'd be wise enough to leave something behind."

"Pinatay nga?" ani Zack.

"You mentioned veils," sabat naman ni Vance na nakaupo sa aking tabi. "The council was found with white veils tied around their necks, and not the usual rope or blanket. Would that mean anything?"

"Veils symbolize hidden knowledge or secrecy," Raphael informed us. "If you wanna know."

Kasunod akong napalingon kay Bella na kanina pa nakatulala sa gitna ng mesa habang sinisinghot ang nagbabanta niyang mga luha.

"Council..." Kumisap-kisap siya. "Patay..."

Namamasa ang kanyang mga mata nang salubungin ang aming mga tingin.

"H-Hindi prito?" tanong niya.

I heard Vance sigh defeatedly beside me, while I just gave Bella a smile and gently shook my head to answer.

"Veils..." Narinig kong bulong ni Paige sa sarili. "Why veils?"

And from then on, my eyes never drifted away from her, as I have always been fascinated by how she looks whenever her thoughts consume her.

Wala sa sariling gumalaw ang isang sulok ng aking labi, nagpipigil ng ngiti, nang masdan siyang unti-unting nadadala sa lalim ng kanyang iniisip. Komportable akong sumandal sa aking upuan at napahilig nang kaunti ng aking ulo.

"You can't really make it any more obvious?" Vance asked.

My attention lingered on his sister for a few seconds before I turned to face him and slightly leaned on my armrest. "What?"

"What the fuck?" he whispered.

Tuluyan na nga akong napangiti at marahang napahagod ng aking labi. "Vance..." Laughing softly, I straightened my back on my chair and cleared my throat. "We have got to find you a woman that can lighten the burden of these days."

"La vie est courte..." I reminded him. "Donc qu'est que tu attends?"

'Life is short. So, what are you waiting for?'

Hindi siya sumagot dahilan na matawa ulit ako nang mahina, at mula sa kanya, inilipat ko ang aking mga mata sa babaeng nakaupo sa pagitan nina Paige at Ash.

"Have you really done nothing these past few days?" usisa ko. 

"Shut up, Grey."

"It's not working..." puna ko. "Quelles que soient les conneries que vous foutiez."
