Vanellope

*

Dad stands and shakes Eliseo's hand with a serious face. Gone is the smile that was there just a few minutes ago. I don't think Dad likes him very much.

Eliseo takes the seat beside me and I shift uncomfortably.

I cannot believe he is here in my birthday. Unbelievable.

"Vanellope, meet Eliseo," Mom introduces him.

"Oh, we've met," Eliseo says with a small smirk.

"Mom, what is he doing here?" I ask unhappily.

"I'm here to wish you happy birthday," He says nicely. "Happy birthday."

"No gift?" Dad asks.

"I had it taken to her bedroom. It's a surprise," He says and winks at me.

"Eliseo here is your chosen mate," Mom says excitedly.

"I don't want a chosen mate, especially not one as obnoxious and annoying as this one," I say.

Dad chuckles but hides it with a cough. Eliseo just sits back calmly, enjoying this.

"Vanellope Aspen Hyde," Mom gasps. "Do not talk about your chosen mate like that."

"It's okay, Mrs. Hyde, your daughter and I got off on the wrong foot," Eliseo says calmly.

I'm not really one to curse but I really want to right now.

"Vanellope, apologize," Mom say, glaring at me.

"No, I only said the truth," I reply stubbornly.

"Vanellope," Mom calls sternly but I roll my eyes and cross my arms.

"Honey, just let her be," Dad says softly.

"Yes, Mrs. Hyde. It is not a problem," Eliseo adds.

"Can you just stop trying to act good all of a sudden?" I ask Eliseo.

"I'm just trying to be nice," Eliseo says. "You should try it."

"Well maybe if you hadn't been such a douchebag, I would be nice," I counter.

"Vanellope!" Mom calls.

"I didn't do anything wrong," Eliseo tries to defend himself.

I scoff. "Yeah, because kissing someone without their consent is not doing anything wrong," I say sarcastically.

"You did what?" Dad asks.

"The teacher asked me to and you kissed me back," Eliseo says.

"Doesn't justify you kissing me in the first place and then calling me yours," I say, raising my voice.

"You are mine, my chosen mate," He says smugly.

"You two, calm down," Mom says.

"I'm just going to step outside for a second," I say.

"Don't you dare," Mom says but I stand up and walk away from the table.

I stride outside the restaurant without looking back, only stopping when I reach a bench. I sit on it and huff a breath.

That obnoxious, annoying male just had to ruin my birthday.

It's a little cold out here so I tug at the sleeves of my shirt as I watch the streets. There are few people strolling, an almost empty cafe directly opposite me and some cars driving by now and then. It makes me wonder what part of the world we are in.
