Chapter 3: waking up

Dream POV.

The human slept longer than I expected. I got home and put him in a guest bedroom right beside my own room, deciding that I'd set up a permanent room for him later. It was about midnight when I got home and since I didn't need to sleep I spent the entire night sitting on a couch in the corner of his room and waited for him to wake up.

It was after 9am when he finally showed any signs of waking up. I was tapping my foot impatiently as I considered leaving him here and going to do some more work. I wondered if Sapnap or Skeppy's humans had moved much, or if they were still sleeping like mine was.

Skeppy put us all on a call last night and told Sapnap and I how to take care of humans, just because neither of us had owned one before, but he told us pretty obvious stuff that just wasted our time. He told us things like, "learn their likes and dislikes," or "don't stress them out or try and force contact with you by picking it up until they're used to you," or "be gentle with them at first, we did just catch them last night."

He talked about it as though we were idiots, I mean neither of us would do this straight away.

Suddenly I saw a hint of movement and my eyes darted up to see the human shifting on the bed and my expression softened.

George POV.

Last night I slept better than I have in years, I didn't even really remember falling asleep. Only running, with Darryl and Karl. Then, I waded across the river and fell... nothing else. What was weirder though was that it is Winter and I actually felt warm for once. Maybe I fell asleep right by the fire or something... or maybe, in a worse case scenario, I had hypothermia. I heard that when you get that you start to feel really warm right before you die. Another strange thing was that my clothes weren't wet... if I was in the river surely I would be cold and wet.

I opened my eyes and looked around to see where I fell asleep... and.... Holy shit this isn't the cave. I'd been lying on a warm bed in a large bedroom, dressed in some grey sweatpants and a warm hoodie, that explains why I was warm and dry instead of sitting in a cave, and cold and wet.

One might have assumed that this entire hell which had been my life for the last 10 years was all a dream, or more accurately a terrible nightmare. But any thoughts of that were ruined when I saw a tall blond figure sitting on a couch watching me. The same one from last night. His face was solemn but his eyes still glowed slightly brighter than normal.

"Morning." It said when his eyes met mine, I didn't reply and just stared at it with a disgruntled expression. However internally I was freaking out and why wouldn't I be. I was sitting in a bed, wearing strange clothes in a strange house with a demon in front of me.

The blond demon didn't seem like he expected a reply and stood up, walking over to me until he stood right beside the bed. In order to try and put as much distance between us as possible I shuffled back in the other direction.

He sighed before looking at me, "what's your name?" He asked.

Why would I tell you? You're probably going to eat me the second I answer whatever questions you ask.

"Well. My name is Dream." He introduced, holding his hand out for a moment for me to shake before pulling it away almost instantly and sighing.

The demon, Dream, went on to ask several more questions which I didn't answer before giving up with a sigh. He moved back over to the couch and sat down, pulling out his phone to text someone.

Darryl POV.

I felt... different when I woke up this morning. For once I didn't feel tired from lying on a cave floor... actually this didn't even feel like a cave floor.

My eyes fluttered open to see a blurry room... I couldn't tell what it was exactly without my glasses on but it was definitely a room.

For a moment I wondered how I got here before I remembered. Demon's had found our cave and began chasing us. One of them caught me and he must have done something to make me fall asleep because I don't remember anything else after that.

Suddenly I saw some movement, it looked human but it's glowing eyes told me otherwise. It stood up slowly and took a step towards me. "Hi there," he spoke softly, talking to me as if I was a little kid as he slowly moved closer.

In response I shuffled backwards, along the bed that I was on.

The demon's eyes seemed to widen and he moved quicker as I shuffled back. "No wait!" His voice got louder and I immediately saw him cursing himself for doing that.

Before I could process anything I shuffled too far and fell off the bed, causing me to release a small groan of pain.

In an instant the demon was beside me and I was worried what he would do. But all of my guesses were proven wrong when he carefully lifted me up and sat me back on the bed. "Are you okay?" He asked in a soft voice, taking a step back so that he wasn't close enough for me to freak out.

"I think so." I responded quietly and hearing that seemed to relax him.

The demon moved around for a moment, grabbing something off of a set of drawers beside the bed and holding them out for me. Not knowing what it was I refused to touch it and the demon let out a patient sigh. "These are some glasses, the ones you had were almost broken. Figured you might want some new ones."

"Uhh, thanks." I took them and put them on, taking a few long seconds for my eyes to adjust. Sure enough, I was in a large bedroom, and I took a while to look around it before turning to the demon. He had spiky jet black hair that bounced slightly when he moved. A pair of black jeans and a blue hoodie were thrown on messily over his frame.

"Hi." He smiled again, now that I could see him, and I couldn't help but feel slightly at ease. Why? It's a demon. His people took over the world. His people are responsible for taking my parents from me and now they've taken Karl and George.

But he's not his people right? The smile he is giving me seems sincere.

"H-hi," I mumbled in response, before my face flushing red. I covered it with my hands and heard him chuckle.

"I'm Skeppy." The demon said with a slight smile, showing his fangs slightly when I looked back up at him.

"I'm Darryl," I responded quietly.

There was a silence in the room after that, I was unsure of what to say or do. Should I run? Should I try and kill the demon? Or should I just let whatever this is happen?

I didn't need to take a while trying to choose. Skeppy had an extremely strong build, and I doubt I could overpower him. The option of running doesn't seem like it will work either. Even if I could get out of the room without getting caught straight away I don't know where I am. I might be in the middle of a city overrun by demons and none of them may be as nice as Skeppy so far is.

"Why am I here?" I decided to ask, figuring I may as well stay here. My eyes met his for a moment before darting away. I didn't want to give him a reason to attack me, demon's are naturally stronger than humans and he could kill me in an instant. I took a deep breath before rewording my question, "why does your kind take mine?"

"Well." Skeppy sat down on the edge of the bed to explain, sitting a good distance away from me, "I don't know why exactly it started but demons take humans for different reasons... some as pets, some as... servants." The last option took longer for him to say and it caused my eyes to widen slightly.

"So I'm guessing I'm a servant then." I said in a hushed tone to myself.

"No." Skeppy replied in a firm but reassuring tone. I forgot that demons had super hearing. My green eyes widened as I looked back over to him and he continued but in a softer voice. "No. I don't think humans should be used as servants, not many people that I know do. I can promise you that I won't use you as a servant."

So I'm a pet then...

I thought back to all the pets I had as a child, before the demons came, as I tried to figure out what that would mean to be a pet. Only one came to mind, a little white dog we called Rat. I remembered taking her for walks downtown with my family, and teaching her to do tricks like rolling over on command. Neither of these, or any of the other ideas that came to mind, seemed appealing for a life, but better than being a servant I guess.

"What do I do as a pet?" I couldn't help but ask.

Skeppy shrugged. "It's not that complicated I guess. Demon's just often use humans for company," he explained. Well I guess that's not too bad.

"Where are Karl and George?" I asked worriedly, my mind finally deciding to focus on the pair of them, "are they alright?"

"Yes, they are both fine. They are both with some of my friends, nothing bad will happen to them, okay?"

I gave a shaky nod and let out a sigh of relief. My friends are fine.

Karl POV.

A pair of voices roused me from my sleep. My first thought was that it may be Darryl and George, arguing as usual but their voices were off. Plus, I was warm when I woke up, and comfortable, which is strange seeing as it's the beginning of Winter and I live in the cave. I tried to ignore it and go back to sleep, after all this was one of the best sleeps I've had in years but I couldn't help but listen to the two voices.

"So can you tell me again, why did you get a human?" The first voice asked.

"Because Quackity, you are always working at Las Nevadas and I feel lonely, I got him so I can have some company when you aren't here," the other replied.

"And you're telling me that just got him last night? Did Skeppy help you catch him, Sapnap? What is his name?"

"I don't know, he hasn't woken up yet. But we caught him and 2 others. Dream has one and so does Skeppy." The second answered.

That's when it clicked for me. The weird names, the fact he was talking about catching humans, and the fact that my two friends were missing made me realise. These 2 people were both demons.

Immediately I started shaking slightly, even though I knew they'd probably notice I didn't care, I was just worried for myself and my friends. Why did they take me? What do they want from me?

"Shit," one of them, the second one mumbled, probably noticing my shaking from where he stood.

I heard a pair of footsteps approaching, followed by another one. They were standing right over me now.

"What's wrong Sapnap?" The other asked.

"He's woken up, dumbass, and clearly scared shitless."

Suddenly I felt a hand on my shoulder, causing me to shake more. "Hey. It's alright. Calm down." The second one spoke softly to me, but it didn't help.

In an instant I turned around and elbowed him in the stomach before shuffling back to the edge of the bed and diving off it.

One of the pair, the one that I didn't elbow, was laughing, and the winded one growled at him. "Shut up Quackity, it isn't funny."

"I disagree," the first giggled, "it's really funny. Plus why didn't you expect him to do that? I mean we are both demons and he's a human. Who knows what he's been told about us?"

"I guess you're right," the first one sighed quietly, finally seeming to have recomposed himself.

By now I had hidden myself under the bed, I laid on my stomach and could see the pairs feet on from where I sat. One of the pair was wearing some neat clothes, leather shoes and dress pants, the other was wearing jeans and sneakers. However, as far as I could tell, the one dressed more formally was the shortest.

Suddenly they both knelt down and peered under the bed at me. Sure enough, the one which was wearing formal clothes was shorter and had dark brown eyes which glowed softly from under his nearly black hair. He also had a faint scar over one eye and couldn't help but wonder what had caused it.

The other one had black hair and tied it back with a white bandanna, his eyes glowed a fiery orange as they both watched me for a moment.

The shorter of the 2 spoke first, "are you going to come out of there anytime soon?" he asked, and I shook my head. "Worth a try," he muttered afterwards.

"Look, please come out. We promise to whatever god from whatever religion you're from that we won't hurt you." The ravenette with the orange eyes said.

I shook my head quickly, I was atheist and even if I wasn't I still wouldn't trust the pair of demons. "You honestly thought that would work?" The shorter of the pair asked the other.

He just shrugged and turned his attention to a phone when it vibrated from his pocket.

Sapnap POV.

I watched as the human under the bed quivered as he watched us, he readied himself to shuffle backwards at any sign of movement we made. "Look, please come out. We promise to whatever god from whatever religion you're from that we won't hurt you." I promised him, although I knew all religions were a lie I thought it might comfort him.

The boy just shook his head and tried to move back some more. "You honestly thought that would work?" Quackity asked, and I just shrugged in response.

After a moment of silence my phone vibrated from my pocket and I pulled it out, reading the text that had been sent on the groupchat.

Dream: have any of you 3 made progress with the humans?

Nope

None

Hbu?

Dream: same.

Skeppy: I mdae some pogress.

My hmuans nmae is Darryl.

He siad his freinds are called Karl nd George.

Ur welcome 😜

Dream: thx I'll see which one works.

Maybe we should let them hang out.

Dream: ?

If they know the others r ok they might trust us more, knowing we haven't done anything to them.

Skeppy: god wehn did u gte so smart?

Dream: might work...

Skeppy: how abt tihs aftrnoon?

Dream: sure

Ok

When I read that I put my phone in my pocket and turned to the human who still hadn't moved. "Want to see your friends this afternoon?" I asked him.

His expression changed the minute I mentioned his friends. "Really?"

"Yeah... if you come out from under there... please..."

Both Quackity and I moved back so he had more room and after a moment he climbed out from under the bed and stood up, trying to keep as much distance between us as possible.
