Coming Home

I was aching not only in my stomach but my head as well. So many distractions and possibilities, anything could go wrong and with my luck, everything would go wrong. After our chat with Gumball, Marshall and I took a few minutes to gather our thoughts. I was still currently trying to do so, even after the ten minutes of silence that I was granted.

With no words Marsh simply stood up, slinging his bags over his shoulder as usual. I watched as he gave me a quick nudge of his head, signaling me to follow him. I did so after gathering my bags and breathing out a deep breath, readying myself for what I knew was about to be a horrible night, if it hadn’t been already.

As much as I tried not to, I couldn’t help but overthink the many possible outcomes of tonight's reunion. I desperately wanted to see Gumball get his face smashed by Marshall but I knew that would be a problem if it ever did happen. What if Gumball lied and won't let anyone come see me? What if he tries to make a move and I’m defenseless. He is the price, afterall.

I walked along side Marshall; quickly, quietly, and sadly.

“I’ll visit you everyday Fi.” Marsh said, seemingly reading my thoughts. I was going to be lonely yes, but that was one of my least concerns. I wanted Marshall to visit everyday of course but I wanted to prove my feelings for him more.

“No.” I said simply, noticing some familiar sights as I walked along the grassy path.

“What do you mean, ‘no’? I-”

“The deal’s still in place, Marsh. Come once a week.” I could feel the vampire’s gaze on me but still I never turned to face him. Seeing his face would just make my walls crumble and I couldn’t have that happening now.

He didn’t say anything in return and we walked in silence, now underground, the way in which we had came. It was colder underground somehow and creepy as well, the only noises being my footsteps and the plopping of the occasional water droplet.

I shivered slightly as yet another cold gust of air attacked my body. I noticed Marsh wasn’t beside me anymore and turned around only to see the vampire demon floating in one spot and shuffling around in his bag.

“Hey, what’re y-”

“Here, Fi. Cover up.” He mumbled, pulling out one of his hoodies and tossing it to me. I caught it with a smile and dropped my bags quickly so that I could slip it on.

“Thanks.” I sniffed, picking up my bags and cuddling into the woodsy-strawberry smelling jacket.

We walked on until my legs began to wobble slightly with every step I took. We were almost there, though, so I wouldn’t give up. I thought about sneaking into the treehouse for a few minutes before we arrived at the castle but knew Gumball would know, considering the GPS on us is still in place.

I let out a deep sigh as we finally trecked to the upper world once again. The fresh air was still cold, but much better than being underground for what seemed like hours. I looked to the distance and could see the light of the Candy Kingdom castle. As much as I didn’t want to see that place, I couldn’t help but smile. We were basically home.

We hadn’t died.

Everything was well. Well, almost everything.

“You know, it’s funny.” Marshall said quietly as it would be taboo to speak in a normal voice.

“What is?” I asked, letting out yet another deep breath with my words.

“You’re the hero, right? So why does it always seem like you’re the prisoner?”

This time I turned to look at him. I met his eyes and knew his question was serious but I had no way to answer it. The more I thought about it, the more his question was true and it made me feel a number of emotions but the most dominant one was anger. After a little thought I began walking again, descending the hill that led to the oh-so-beautiful Candy Kingdom with Marshall tailing behind.
