I stood at the stall with three hoops in my hand, Prissy standing next to me as she carefully tried to throw the hoops at the milk bottles which were on a table inside the stand, biting on her bottom lip in concentration. I held my hoop in my hand as I practiced my throw without letting go of the hoop, watching Prissy throw hers as it bounced, not landing on a bottle.
"Unlucky" I said to her as she looked over at me, rolling her eyes at me as I threw my hoop, managing to land it on the neck of a bottle as I looked over at Prissy, sticking my tongue out at her. "Two more and I will win the prize" I said to her as I laughed, causing her to shake her head as he turned to watch me, my wrist practising my throw once again, about to let it go as someone called my name.
"Kate" I heard someone say as I turned to look, seeing Winifred waving at me with a wide smile on her face, her hand through Gilbert's arm and her parents behind her as she made her way over to me. "Oh my gosh" I said quietly, turning to look at Prissy with wide eyes as she raised her eyebrows at me, a smile on her face of pure amusement. "Good luck" Prissy whispered fo me as she turned back to the booth, preparing to throw her next hoop as Winifred stood in front of me.
"It's so nice to see you again" she said to me as she leaned forward for a hug, causing me to laugh as I hugged her gently, smiling at her parents over her back as we made eye contact. "You as well" I said to her as she pulled away, turning to look at her parents as she motioned towards me. "This is Kate Prewett, she's Dr Prewett's daughter" Winifred said to her parents who smiled over at me, her mothers arm draped around her fathers as I looked over at Gilbert who was staring at the ground, extremely uncomfortable right now.
"It's nice to meet you two" I said to them, waving at them slightly as I held my hoops in my hand, not knowing what else to do with them as Winifred smiled over at me. "They are here visiting from London" she told me as I raised my eyebrows at her, looking over at them with a smile on my face. "That's a long way to come for the county fair" I said to them jokingly, causing everyone to laugh as Winifred shook her head at me, tucking a loose strand of her hair behind her ear.
"They are also here to meet Gilbert, but he's not as important as the fair" Winifred said to me as she smiled over at Gilbert, who looked up at her as he forced a smile at her, Winifred father setting his hand on Gilbert's shoulder. "It was lovely meeting you, but it seems you are preoccupied in your game" Winifred mother said to me as I let out a laugh, looking down at my rings as I nodded my head. "I was hoping to win the stuffed bear" I said to them with a smile, earning a laugh back as Winifred extended her hand, squeezing my arm gently.
"I'll see you later" she said to me as I nodded my head at her, watching her walk back over to Gilbert, who offered her his arm as he cleared his throat, not looking over at me as they began to walk away. "It was nice meeting you" I said to her parents who smiled before following after their daughter, saying their goodbyes as I turned back around, looking at Prissy who was smiling at me, finding this whole thing a lot funnier than it actually was.
"That was awkward" Prissy said to me as I let out a breath, shaking my head as I turned back to the game, holding the ring in my hand as I tossed it, the hoop bouncing off of a bottle as I rolled my eyes. "Let not talk about it" I said to Prissy looking over at her as she tried to hold back laughter, finding way too much amusement in my bad situation. "She's nice" Prissy said to me, turning to look at me as she picked up her bag, holding it in her hand as I nodded my head, throwing my last ring, which also did not land itself on a bottle.
"I know, which is why it's difficult to not like her" I said to Prissy, smiling at the man who was managing the stall as we turned around, Prissy still smiling at me as I shook my head at her. "He's going to propose to her" I said to Prissy quietly who looked over at me, no longer smiling at me as she shook her head. "You don't know that" she told me as I raised my eyebrows at her, shaking my head at her as I walked a bit faster than her, turning to face her as we stopped walking.
"He's meeting her parents" I told her as she set her hands on my shoulders, giving them a squeeze as she looked at me reassuringly. "It will be okay" she said simply, dropping her hands as she smiled over at me, shrugging her shoulders at me quickly. "I hope so" I replied as she started walking away, causing me to chase after her, the thought of Gilbert proposing to Winifred circling around my head.
