Chapter 96: Jerky Duck

The call starts and the first thing I hear is a duck-like noise. "He--"

"WHAT THE HECK WAS THAT?!"

"Dove?"

"Travis?"

"Uh... yeah?"

"Are you sure this isn't a duck? Are you a duck?"

"What the heck Dove."

"That noise didn't sound human, are you or are you not a duck?"

"I'm not a duck!"

"Okay, fine." Suddenly, the noise happens once again. "I DON'T BELIEVE YOU!"

"Why? What are you even talking about?!"

"You keep making duck-like noises and you can't tell me otherwise! I saw a duck on my way to class the other day, don't tell me I don't know what a duck sounds like because I had a conversation with that adorable little duck that I named, Pip."

"You named a duck... 'Pip'?"

"Short for Pipsqueak. Wait! HEY! Don't change the freaking subject! Why are you making duck noises?"

"I'm NOT!"

"YES! YOU--" The duck noise cuts me off. "THAT'S IT! I'm driving back to Phoenix Drop and we're going to fight."

"What? But I didn't do anything!"

"Do NOT lie to me, Travis. I know where you live."

"I'm not lying!"

"ARE you or are you NOT a duck? ANSWER THE QUESTION HONESTLY!"

"I AM NOT A DUCK!"

"I SAID HONESTLY!"

"Are you mentally okay? Dove? Do you need me to call someone?"

"DID YOU JUST CALL ME MENTAL?! I AM NOT MENTAL! IF ANYONE IS MENTALLY INSANE IT'S YOU! YOU HALF DUCK, HALF HUMAN! DON'T MAKE ME FIGHT YOU!"

"I'm not half duck!"

"I DON'T HAVE TIME FOR THIS! This morning I had two papers due but my laptop decided to malfunction last night so I stayed all night in the library to rewrite it all, I have lots of work due tomorrow that I can't work on because my car is broken and the library at my school is closed for repairs, I had work today and I can't afford to miss it so I had to walk, and I had all my tough classes today. I'M TOO TIRED FOR GAMES!"

"I think you're going through a breakdown."

"Don't tell me when I'm going through a breakdown! I tell you when you're going through a breakdown! AND YOU ARE!" I start mumbling beneath my breath, "Trying to pretend you're not a duck, I know you're a duck, I know you are."

"Dove... get some sle--"

"DON'T TELL ME WHAT TO DO! DUCK! YOU DON'T TELL ME TO SLEEP! I TELL YOU TO SLEEP! GO TO SLEEP!"

"No--"

"Don't say 'no' to me! You do as you're told! Don't make me RUN all the way to Phoenix Drop because I'll do it! I WILL DO IT! BE GLAD I CAN'T REACH THROUGH THE PHONE AND CHOKE YOU!"

"Dove, you should--"

"UGH!"

"Well, SORRY, for trying to help."

"Who said I needed your help?"

"WHY DID YOU CALL ME THEN?!"

"Oh, right. It's multiple things actually, did you fix Zerenity yet?"

"Most of the time, she's so far in 'go mode' it's hard to hold a conversation with her so... 'no'."

"See, I should be there so I can pound some sense into her. Second, are you still dating that girl?"

"The one I told you about? No, she got too clingy, too fast."

"Why did you say it like you're dating someone else now?"

"Because I am."

"OH MY IRENE!"

"It's not my fault!"

"Stop being such a nice person and say 'NO'! Didn't you break up with the clingy one?"

"Yeah."

"HOW IS IT EASIER TO BREAK UP WITH SOMEONE THAN REJECTING SOMEONE?!"

"It wasn't easy! Dante had to come over, give me an earpiece, and tell me what to say."

"For crying out loud! You're too nice. SAY 'NO' SOMETIMES!"

"I don't want to come off as a jerk."

"You're hopeless... at this rate, Zerenity will never fall in love with you."

"But Dante said the opposite."

"Who are you going to trust? Me or him?"

"Well... he has been in a lot more relationships than you..."

"... ... ...Shut up."

"Jerk." I mumble as I roll my eyes.
