Chapter 67: Partners
~Laurance~

I yawned as I continued to scribble down notes. Could class get any more boring?

"Okay, now that this unit is done, we'll be starting a project on it." My teacher comments. A project? Okay, that's not as boring. I sit up and begin to actually listen. "We have an even number of students, get in a group of two and I'll begin to explain."

Group of two? I only talk to one person in the class... and as of recently, she hasn't been talking to me. I turn to face Lyrvanna.

Her eyes widen as she sees me and she begins looking around. She turns to someone but they pair up with someone so she turns to someone else but they also have a partner. Soon enough, it's just us two who aren't partnered up.

Her face turns a shade of pink before lays her head on the desk. I walk over to her. Over the weekend, I decided to try to give her the space she needs to calm down, I didn't mean to make things so awkward but it is still my fault so I guess I should respect her wishes.

No matter how much it kills me.

"Hey, neighbor," I say as I sit in a desk next to her.

She sits up and stares at me confused before she smiles. "Hi."

I pretend to study over my notes, from the corner of my eye I see her stare at me. I look at her and she quickly turns but that doesn't mean I didn't see the blush on her face. I can't help but chuckle at her struggle to not ask me why I haven't said anything about 'us'. It's pretty obvious that's what she's wondering and it makes sense too.

That pattern went on two more times before Mr. Yab decides to start. "This project is simple, make a model of the Roaring Twenties era, a tri-board presentation to present to the class, and a 5-page report." Mr. Yab says. "You have three weeks."

"Did he say simple?" Lyrvanna and I comment at the same time before looking at each other. She quickly turns away. This... is going to be a long three weeks.

"So how should we start?" I ask Lyrvanna as we walk into my room. She shrugs as she traces her finger along my bookshelf. I spin in my spinny chair as I tap a pencil to my head. Like I said, long three weeks. "Favorite thing about the era?"

"What?" She looks over at me.

This time I shrug. "I'm just creating small talk to get to know my... neighbor." Okay, I'll admit I'm being a little 'salty', it's just hard to think of her as just a neighbor and I'm a little hurt that's what she said she wanted.

"Oh. Right." She nods and turns back to my books. She thinks for a moment before giggling. "The jazz."

I stop spinning and chuckle. "I figured." She just nods. And now we're back to silence. How long is this going to go on for? I'm trying to play along but this is torture. "Maybe we should begin with the essay since that's the most tedious."

"Sounds like a plan." She gets her notes out. "Except... do we have to? I mean... reports are hard and it's going to be so long. What are we even supposed to write? This era didn't even last, it was followed by another disaster, they got a good couple of cheers out before they were wacked with depression, literally. Mr. Yab already told us the next era is the Great Depression era. What are we supposed to say? 'Oh, yeah. After World War I ended, everyone went into a stage of happiness and all that JAZZ, people made TV's then OH NO! Everything is depressing again! Find out what happens next time on Lyrvanna doesn't give a crap about what happened in history'. Now we just need four more pages of that."

I burst into laughter after her random outburst. She stares at me startled before staring at her notes like she's reading it. "It's a good start, what you said was basically half a page, all we have to do is stretch that out and add in the other things that happened in this era and we're done."

"Really?" She looks at me curiously.

"Really." I shrug.

"Then we should start, my parents don't really like when I'm out too long." She's not lying but they don't care as much when she's at my house. I guess when she hit the pretend reset button, she's going to really start over.

"Alright then." I scoot into my desk and open my laptop to start typing. Lyrvanna grabs the random chair that I still have in the corner of my room and sits next to me. One day it just appeared there and I don't know why. Lyrvanna said it was a ghost who likes being in corners and got tired of standing and sitting on the floor.

~*Later That Night*~

I peel my eyes open and feel a weight on my shoulder, I look over to see Lyrvanna's fallen asleep on me. We must have fallen asleep as we were writing the essay. I decided to look over it, careful not to wake Lyrvanna. As I'm scrolling through it, I realize we have five pages.

Did we seriously type that in a day?

"Nana, what time is it?" Lyrvanna yawns as she sits up rubbing her eyes. "I had a weird dream... Laurance and I--" She opens her eyes and stares at me. "Nothing." She looks away quickly. "Did we finish the report? I don't remember."

"Yeah." I nod deciding not to ask about the dream no matter how much I want to. She and I... what? "I don't remember finishing it either but we have five pages and it all seems to be about the Roaring Twenties."

"Okay..." She sighs tiredly. She checks her phone. "Oh my Irene... my mom is fuming! I didn't tell her I was staying over and it's four in the morning!"

"Tell her what happened, we were working on a project and you fell asleep. She shouldn't be mad once you tell her that, right?"

"I don't know~!" She whines. "I need to get home, we have school in the morning anyway. Bye." She dashes out the door and to her house.

And she was gone again. We've already finished the thing that should of been the longest. I know it seemed like I hated the idea of these three weeks going by quickly but I'd be happy as long as I'm around her.

And now... it seems like it'll be going way quicker than I want it to because I know after this project is over, she'll be gone again.
