Chapter 1- Cassandra

Start from the beginning

Despite her client paying her an insane sum of money to kill the guy sleeping with his wife, Cassie was a minimalist. She got only the bare necessities. Killing people for money had become her main source of income as well as a way to stay in shape. Some would consider her cold-blooded for killing for money. She never denied the accusations, but she was only one monster in the sea full of them. People who paid others to kill for them were the real deal. As well as maybe spineless cowards, she dared say. But nobody cared about that, because they had money. And as is the rule, money makes the world go round.

Cassandra put a pill bottle inside her bag, strapping a gun to her leg. The black leather jacket hung on the doorknob, ready to go, Mike's knife safely inside the lining, awaiting it's turn.

A taxi was waiting for her when she stepped outside, the sun low on the horizon. She would be getting herself some answers tonight.

The sun had set when she stepped outside the taxi, heading for the tall gates of the grand mansion. Alonzo was stupid to hold a gathering in his own home. How was he still alive?

The security guard stood at the entrance. He gave her a questioning glance when she approached. "Nome?"

"Boh Adesso." The name was a mockery she'd made up. Not only was there not a single person with such a name, but she was surprised the guard hadn't laughed. He put up a finger, before checking with someone on the other end of his comm system.

Cassandra waited. Spilling the details of his boss's illegal partnerships wasn't the only thing his secretary did. Cassie may not be a hacker but she could get a fake name on a guest list.

"Benvenuto," the guard said, moving out of the way.

"Grazie," Cassandra said, strolling past him. She let out a barely noticeable sigh of relief as she strode down the stone path of the mansion. No matter how many times she'd done it, she still got nervous.

As she approached the house, she began scanning for anyone familiar. Majesty would never leave one of her representatives unguarded.

She slid off her jacket when she entered the house, taking a glass of champagne off a tray a caterer was carrying around. She wasn't quite 18 yet, but she had no one to tell her no.

A big crystal chandelier was hanging above the tiled floors of the grand hall. It was the first thing Cassie noticed for one simple reason. If one of those were to fall off the ceiling, no person under it would survive. She scowled at the glamour. Rich people always thought they were above others, that they owned the world. Unfortunately, they did own it.

Two glasses of champagne later, Cassandra still hadn't spotted her target. Majesty's people would check the guest list and her cover was going to fly if she didn't move soon. Everyone she was running from was going to come after her. Phi would find her and that was almost worse than Majesty. She had done this many times, but she had never been so close to a lead.

A loud laugh from behind her caused her hand to stiffen slightly around the glass. She recognized it. As a reflex, she straightened, her face becoming neutral like a mask. You don't feel anything.

Familiar feeling of numbness overtook her body as she exhaled. All the emotion she was feeling was trapped in a mental cage. It left a pit in her stomach and a lump in her throat but it worked. She didn't feel anything. It had been her go-to whenever she felt her emotion start to resurface.

Chatter no longer seemed to reach her ears. Cassandra was focused, scanning the room up and down, like a cat looking for a mouse. The people standing around didn't even glance her way, too busy discussing endangered species. Alonzo was an endangered animal on her list. And he was going to go extinct soon.
