Okay, you guys wanted it, here it is: Fun Date Ideas for Romance Writers

And I’m talking about to write about, but you can go on these dates. I don’t care. I’m going to try to be as organized as possible, but we all know I’m a mess, so we’ll see how this goes. I’ll do it by categories and then actual dates, so you can just skip through to things that might appeal to your characters (also this is a two parter, because it got so long:

1. Charity

Seriously, my best friend and I are lucky to have one glass of wine alone, so we have to make a date out of wherever we are. And anymore that’s typically a charity event so here’s some things that we’ve done that you might find interesting and different (although it’s really not a one-on-one thing at all. But charity is so great. Donate a little more time and money to charity instead of television and expensive jewelry or clothes or whatever. Really, I’d rather go on a date at a charity event with lots of people than some fancy ass dinner. It’s so much more fun)

-Shelters: These can be animal shelters, homeless shelters, battered women/men shelters. Seriously there is so much to do. Pets need walked, played with, groomed; homeless people need blankets and food; people seeking refuge need someone to talk to. Seriously, there’s endless possibilities.

We helped at an animal shelter that was constantly in need of people to help them walk the dogs and just get them out and play with them instead of keeping them cooped up all day. Do you know how much fun it is to just play with a ton of dogs all day? I’ll tell you: so much. Besides, there is nothing makes someone more appealing than watching them play with puppies. Let’s be real. Make your characters play with dogs and they’ll love you.

There are also soup kitchens. It’s a twist on the cooking together scene we all know and are looking to spice up.

Also, homeless people and people seeking refuge have some insane stories. One of my favorite parts about meeting people is learning about the past and their hopes and dreams. Have your characters meet someone in need and it’ll open the floor for them to share more about themselves.

It’s truly amazing and I think sometimes it’s important to step back from dates and open yourself up to the idea of helping other people. So really, there are millions of directions to go here. I wanna let you take the reins and see what you come up with.

-“Fun Runs”: My best friend and I are both runners, so we do races together when we can, and it’s a lot of fun even if you’re not together the whole time. We’re both insanely competitive, so we get a kick out of comparing times and paces and feet (seriously, I hate feet, but if you want to see runner’s feet, mine are badass).

But I see tons of couples running together and if I weren’t insane about pushing myself I’d think it was cute. Unfortunately I’ve been trained. If you can talk, you aren’t running hard enough, but I have done some “walks” where we went together and that was so nice.

Plus they do some really fun runs. Like color runs and stuff. And there’s always water fights and Gatorade splashing everywhere. And it’s a chance to see someone dressed down and sweaty and that’s how I like people. You can’t fake anything when you’re too exhausted!

-Reconstruction Projects: My hometown has been doing a huge restoration project on our town square and my best friend and I have done so many things. (I actually painted a huge mural on one of the business and they want me to do another, I just need to find the time, but my best friend helped. You have no idea how much fun it is to paint with someone (and luckily we both had visual art majors in high school so it didn’t turn out horrible)).
