"Mom, I-" Zaide could feel his throat closing up.
"Where did we go wrong? How could you do this to us, Zaide?" She stood up and Zaide took a step back. "Do you know what would happen if your father found out that you're a... homosexual?"
Ana could neither believe that she was saying those things to her own son nor she wanted to. She wanted her family to be safe and not fall apart. Was that too much to ask? Abdul had certain beliefs and the new found revelation would not sit well with him.
"What?!" Zaide flinched when his father all but shouted from behind him.
"Abdul." He had heard everything.
Ana wished she could turn back time and not confront Zaide when Abdul was in the house.
