"I'm scared all the time," he says. "I'm afraid I'll hurt you or worse. Nothing can make him go away, nothing can make him stop."

"You don't have to worry about me. I worry about me enough," I say, jokingly.

"Y/ n.  I'm being serious."

"I know. I'm just trying to help."

"Why? I'm a goddamn ticking time bomb! It's only a matter of time before I explode and Habit kills everyone I've ever loved," he says.

"You can't think like that."

"Why, can't I? Can't I think realistically?"

"Evan ... "

He sits up in bed and shifts position. He bows his head and I wonder briefly if he's crying. I sit up and rub his bare, muscular back. He turns to me and I see how red his eyes are behind those tears.

I wipe away his tears with my fingers.

"I love you, Evan. And I don't care what happens next. I love you."

"I love you too," he whispers. "I just hope that's enough."

"Love is enough," I reply.

"I hope you're right."

"Evan. I'm a girl. I'm always right."
